Define "competitively priced"

I've read reviews from several sites and most all of them claim the 2900XT is competitively priced. Against what? Sure, it's competitive by the fact that it's finally launched... we have more choices now but not pricewise, It's closest match in terms of performance, the 8800GTS 640MB can be had as low as $~320, the 2900XT just released is $400 at best... a difference of almost $80. It's also louder and draws more power. In almost every conclusion, they make it sound like at its current price, the 2900XT is a good buy but I'm having a hard time seeing why.

I think people are basing it on MSRP, not real world prices. While it may perform similar to a GTS640, you can find a GTS for as much as $50 less.

GTS640 is $70 less right now. Hopefully the prices of 2900XT will be lowered shortly (after all it was just launched give it a week or so). But yeah right now it is not competitively priced.

Of course in a month the GTS could be lower still. 😛

It may be competively priced if you are a fanboy, but if you are shopping for the best card for lowest price then its GTS all the way. But yeah, give it a week or so and it will drop an easy $30 or so I would think. However, I always give a company at least 2 WHQL driver releases before I pass final judgment.

If you look at very high resolutions + AA & AF, i would certainly say the HD 2900 XT is competitively priced, aside from a few titles in which they seem driver bugged.

But if you're running <1600x1200, i'd just get the 640 MB 8800 GTS right now.

I'd wait for DX10 reviews to make the final call. By then hopefully street price will be more competitive and driver will be more mature. But the loud HSF and the inability to accept any existing aftermarket cooling solution is quite a deal-breaker for me.

For those who says that there could be a price drop in a week or two for the XT... one can also argue that the GTS could have a similar and equal price drop as well. And it would be less costly to Nvidia than it would be to AMD for cutting prices. AMD is already bleeding money. Fact is... it's $400 right now vs $320. I don't see any reason to pick up an XT at all at the moment.
