"Defiance" new Syfy series thread. No spoilers until aired.

Well, I just watched the first episode. Its available online.

I give it a "meh". It kind of feels like Terra Nova.

It's very complicated with all the different races and the technology and the creatures. I had to pause it and go online to look up stuff during the episode.

I don't think its "accessible" for the average viewer. I couldn't really see the occasional scifi viewer or non scifi interested viewer putting in the work to get into the new world they have created.

If the BSG first episode was a "10" then Defiances first episode was a "5 or 6"

Maybe the complicated new world works for the game they have created but for pete's sake they should have eased into it slowly.

It just occurred to me that SyFy is going to get screwed hard in the ratings department because of the Boston blast. The show may never get a proper chance to build a consistent viewership if no one watches the pilot.

They're working on the press release now.

Starting now. Yes, the Boston blast are all over the news networks.

Defiance setting is 33 years after the "Aliens" arrive/conquest Earth 2013.

Didn't know the Prometheus "Engineer" was part of the show as an artificial being.
😱

Defiance isn't horrible... I'm still not sure if I like it or not.

I definitely don't like the Nolan character. The old tough guy acting like a wise cracking immature kid is getting so overdone and worn out. Maybe if his dialog wasn't so bad it could be tolerable.

And I swear that one chase seen looks like they recorded it straight from the video game. Not sure if it was intentional to promote the game or just being really cheap with the production.

If Nolan dies, I might enjoy this show a lot more.

They show it enough it looks like that people can catch it most of the week and probably next week also seeing how much scifi is pushing it.

At least they showed it unlike the latest episode of Revolution as NBC seemed to be the only major network of the four that actually delayed normal viewing on tonight's shows as far as I saw.

Even HIMYM aired at normal time so I wonder why NBC felt like they had to do it especially with all the news channels they own.

That's what I was afraid of. Everyone seems hellbent on reinventing the BSG tropes of suffering and backstabbing.

As long as they don't ruin the show with religion heavy episodes, at least the human kind, like they did with bsg who knows.

Well they can easily do background on much of the stuff as what's the point of knowing everything about a new scifi show?

That's like saying you can't watch a star trek series for the first time without stopping and reading 500 books on the different races and technology they had.

Syfy posted the ratings.

2.7 million total viewers. Eurekas first episode in 2006 drew slightly more at 4.1 million and Stargate:Atlantis did "more than 4 million viewers" according to wiki.

So, how to judge it? Demographically there are more people today than back in 2004 or 2006. On the other hand there are a lot more places to see it(torrents for instance) and DVR. The DVR numbers will probably not push it higher than Atlantis or Eureka even with more people having them today.

So, a pretty decent debut but not exceptional. Interestingly the number one comment about the show around the web is that with so little scifi available people will watch it. Not a ringing endorsement.

I am assuming that with the first two episodes using a bunch of special effects we will settle in for longer stretches of angst and interpersonal relationship stuff for at least the next few episodes.

I liked it. I didn't go in expecting a phenominal show, but it was entertaining enough. The special effect on some areas (like the chase scene mentioned above) weren't great, but that's not going to make me stop watching a show.

I haven't yet watched the pilot, but I did watch the pilot preview on itunes. Without reading the backstory, it looked pretty stupid at first. The backstory as on wikipedia looks more complex, and I hope they show some of that.

I'll reserve full judgment until I watch the pilot.

I thought this was terrible at first, and as it went along it reached mediocre status. Maybe it'll get better once it gets going. It does remind me of Terra Nova, but not as good. I do think the show has potential, as the world they created could be interesting. Its basically another post apocalypse world, with tech and aliens. If they could have gotten the BSG or even Stargate guys to run this show, it could have been great.

I will say that Mia Kirshner has aged well.

I'll probably watch it until they cancel it, or even sooner. I'll be moving next month, and I'll probably be cutting the cord on cable TV.

I'm thinking about getting the game as well, but right now my time is kinda limited.

I had to go to this site:
http://en.defiance-wiki.com/wiki/Defiance_Wiki
I read the Races and the Timeline. I highly suggest it.
The site is slow and occasionally says there is an error. Just go back and click again. I don't see how they can put all this info into the show even over the course of a season.

Still trying to figure out the entire shield wall thing.

The generator building powering it appeared to be above the wall so it could had been taken out from range attacks not to mention any kind of air units would had been able to fly over the wall.

Hopefully we see more mechs as really those were the only decent tech vehicle we saw other then some movable artillery vehicle.

Don't you think they will go into a lot of it during the show?

It's like looking up the walking dead comics for the backstory on stuff and getting spoilers instead of just watching the show.
