Defending the PS3

I have to be honest, I love Sony and the Playstation, but I find the PS3 release very underwhelming. The only I see worth playing is Resistance and the only other game I want to play is Ratchet and Clank 5. If I wasn't a huge Insomniac fan I'd just get a Wii and a 360. Also, this is the first console that will be more costly than my comp. (I got really great deals and built a comp for less than $500 with a 6800GS) At least with the PSP, there was already a nice library of games (with a Ratchet and Clank games on the way as well.)

Hi, look at my post about worldwide numbers or if you can't find it:
Xbox360 0.30m
PS3 0.48m

Just came back from a Wal-mart in a major city of Ontario😉, there were more 60Gb PS3s in glass cabinets than I could count. They had over 10 stacked inside many sections of cabinet so I'm guessung the hype has simmered down; doubt everyone is still under the "no way, it's gotta be outta stock" impression.

The XBOX360 and the PS3 both SUCK A$$.

Yes you 360 fanboys, your 360 still sucks after being out for an entire year.

I see VERY few if ANY 10/10 games out there, games that are decent are overrated because people have nothing better to play and when they find something decent, they think its the best thing ever.

The XBOX was smiler, terrible games IMHO, yes, even your beloved HALO was very overrated for what it was, seriously.....

The PS2 was the last system with a good game selection., so many to choose from... Hopefully things will turn out similar for this next gen systems.

I'm not one to support Microsoft, and I have never really like the Nintendo Systems, The Sony Playstation 1 killed it for me when it came to them... I was using the Dreamcast when the PS2 came out and was very happy with.... Now I am not Microsoft supporter but when Sega sold all console designs to Microsoft, and they came out with there own console, I liked it. I bought one, and I am still looking to get a 360, but I do not have the money for it right now...

It varies from place to place. I asked a guy at a local Best Buy on how the PS3 was selling there. The last shipment they got, 30, all sold out with minutes.

I hate all the people saying "oh well its got a bluray player, so its a good deal."

I'm sorry but buying new tech is NEVER a good deal. Not only is it new, its a medium that has not been standardized yet so you could be paying a lot for a dead technology.

One of those Japan publishers better make a Parasite Eve 3. If they do - there system belongs to me.

Netflix members get to rent Blu-ray and HD-DVD no extra charge, so we can enjoy 1080p goodness (with $0 invested in discs) while you only get to watch 480i.

While you wait for a safe bet, you'll watch dozens or scores of movies in 20th cenutry low-tech video when you could be enjoying the shiny ultra-rez discs of the future!!!

I own a 360 and a PS3 so I have no fanboy bias, the 360 is a superior machine for the money.
If I didn't love Final Fantasy and GT so much I would've bought a 360.

Have you played Forza? I'm not a car video game fan but from what I've heard Forza is as good if not better than GT. Not sure when it is due for the 360 though.

Forza has fewer cars but higher qual. I decided to commit to the 360 and just get the steering wheel now so I can enjoy PGR3 until Forza 2 comes our way.

Just returned my PS3.
Something was borked with it's Blu-Ray player 🙁
It played games ok, but after getting through about half of the movie that came with it, it stopped working all together.

Two out of the six people I know with them have had that problem as well.

Eh, it depends. I have a HDTV, but I haven't paid for cable since 1998, so all I have is OTA... which is great if you like PBS (unlike me), Fox, and ABC, oh, and a local independent station. Assuming a Toshiba A2 is $500 (instead of $400 at Techdepot), and the player has a lifespan of at least 2 years before losing the "format war", that breaks down to about $21 a month, the cost of cable/whatever, and I mostly just watch DVD movies instead of normal TV anyway. Worst case scenario, I see the writing on the wall and sell the DVDs on Craigslist at a loss, and reinvest in a Blueray player, which should have dropped to a more reasonable price by then.

stolen from xboxscene
Xbox 360: 9.23m (nexgenwars.com) | 7.74m (vgcharts.org)
PS3: 0.82m (nexgenwars.com) | 1.18m (vgcharts.org)
Wii: 2.03m (nexgenwars.com) | 3.19m (vgcharts.org)

My argument has and was in the original post Japanese sales numbers
Xbox360 0.30m
PS3 0.48m
and considering Xbox has had close to a year head start... it's not looking good for them in japan. Worldwide, only time will tell since PS3 just barely launched in europe and has only been out for a little more than a month in the US.

Not that I particularly care since I have no interest in any console, but the EU PS3 launch has been delayed until March, so I'd guess the total number of PS3's sold in Europe right now is right about 0 🙂

There are very few 10/10 games out period. Even on the last-gen machines.

went to walmart and target yesterday. Both had at least 2 PS3's. Wal-mart had 5 60gb and target had 3. though target did have a wii for 5 minutes while i was there. some guy baught it even though it was a open box.

Everywhere I've seen has PS3's in stock. The "shortage" was just people buying them to hawk them off on eBay. Let's see how the PS3 does this year (expect it to be 3rd behind 360 and Wii)

The difference between Sony and Microsoft is that M$ takes a loss on their consoles from the beginning and makes their money from a percentage from the game companies. So it's basically the Microsoft Licensing lawyers that are forcing collection of profits, rather than the console sales....since they take a loss in the beginning when the hardware is still new.

Sony, is probably taking a loss too, but didn't pick cheap enough hardware so it's not scaling as well as the microsoft model. The real question is whether or not you'll get a quality system in the PS3....it may not be ready yet if they cut corners or didn't design the cooling properly.
