It was T/F on a previous exam....

Most people will NOT watch a video in it's entirety on a website.

He said this is false... REALLY? anyone care to defend him?

I put True, as sure a 15-30 second clip ill probably watch, but any sort of 2min+ video, ill just pause and continue through the site on my way to do what i need to do... or ill let it run, while i scroll through the page...

Depends on the length, under 30 seconds and maybe, anything over the video will probably run its course but the persons attention is elsewhere.

this is why marketing is a worthless, meaningless, "field," and those who subscribe to it are both full of themselves and completely oblivious to those around them.

I wouldn't say it's "worthless" it has a pretty good application in the real world... but what you learn is pretty common knowledge to those who understand people...

well, that's mostly my point. it's a waste of time as the field is synonymous with "common sense."

That completely depends. I'll watch a 30 second video all the way even if its terrible. I probably won't watch a 10 minute video even if its decent.

A "good" marketing class deals with psychology. Things that are strange and are not just common sense.

Best example I can think of is a technique called anchoring.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring_(NLP)
Basically the way it works is that emotional states are tied to certain triggers like sounds, lights, images, etc. You can probably think of a song that reminds you of your first kiss or the time you beat megaman 5. Certain brands of perfume remind me of people. This can be used in marketing by trying to associate a certain emotional state with a product. Show a bunch of sexy images, have naked women dancing around to get you turned on, then flash the product for 1 second and it goes away. You didn't learn anything about the product or why you should buy it, but they're trying to associate sexiness with this particular product.

Marketing should really be called brainwashing. Anyone can say why their product is the best or the cheapest, but convincing people to buy shit for no reason at all takes good marketing. Why the hell do people buy Bose sound equipment? Marketing. Brainwashing.

It's a "it depends" kind of statement. IF the video is closely related to what I'm looking for, and IF it's well made, and IF it's not too damned long, then I'll probably watch the entire thing...otherwise...<click> I'm outta there.

Your professors right, I bet 80% of the videos watched on the internet are pr0n, and I don't know a single person who watches an entire pr0n video when they watch one.

Unless he is using empirical data on user behavior or psychological theory, his claim for "most people's" behavior is bullshit. Good marketing uses market research. In the context of user behavior, this requires focus groups, monitored internet browsing sessions, psychological experiments and the like.Has he really not presented any of this type of evidence?

and when the professor DOES provide data, the OP will find all the flaws in the said experiment and get his points back.

I saw the statistics somewhere. The average video is like 3 minutes long, and slightly more than half will watch videos all the way to the end.

if you can figure out where, it would be useful, as that fully defends his position...

Your professor? The real question is what kind of candy-ass college exam has true/false questions on it?

The problem with ten-minute videos is, you often don't know if they're worth watching until you're a few minutes into them. Some of the funniest stuff out there starts slow.

Depends on what the video clip is about. And also if I have a decent internet speed to watch it. At work, even a you-tube video, slows to a snail's pace.
