Even if you can't find a different job that still gets benefits (and you should keep looking!), you CAN find a car that gets better mileage. There's no reason not to get north of 30mpg if you have THAT kind of commute. Or get a motorcycle/big scooter.

We're not talking about buying new, that's just stupid.🙂[/quote]He has no money. A 1993 Buick LeSabre is going to sell for, what, 1500 tops (if it is in great condition). Honda Civics start at 3-4 grand (used, early 90s). You could get one from the 80s for less, but you'd be dealing with a host of unknown repair costs.
Bottom line: He's not going to be able to trade his LeSabre for a Civic, and he doesn't have enough money to cover the difference in cost between the two.
