I can't set default apps for photo viewer, video player, or web browser. I click the "+" and choose the app, but nothing happens.

I CAN set the file type associations, but it does no good.

There are also several entries under "Select default app by protocol" which won't change either.

It is as though the system doesn't have access to the registry entries where these things are stored.

Does anyone know where they are stored? I did look this up online (spent several hours going through registry entries and whatnot) but nothing I have found seems to be the correct place for Win10.

P.S. Also, when clicking a link in an email in Outlook, I get an error saying there was a problem and that "the remote procedure call failed."

Am I going to have to reinstall Windows?

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Based on your info thus far, first try going to services and see if Remote Procedure Call is running.

After messing with this until 4am I came to the conclusion that something was preventing the registry values from being changed. I ran a utility that re-added administrator and system permissions to all registry entries and it solved the problem. All associations are where they should be for now.

When the utility finished doing its thing, my start menu and the search button didn't work. I ran that "Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers..." command floating around the net and it fixed the start menu (although there is about a half second delay between clicking [or pressing the windows key] and it opening), but the search button still doesn't function. It said something about not having access to the install location (for some things, for others it was fine).

I created a new account and they both work fine there. I tried running that command in the new account with the same errors. At that point I gave up and went to bed.

So, I'll be working on that today. I might try an in-place upgrade because there is just too much to put back if I switch to a new account. If it comes to that, I'll just re-install from scratch.
