When are you going, where are you hunting and what will be your weapon(s) of choice?

Me:
Next week (11th-13th)
NW lower Michigan (Traverse City area)
Archery hunt (Mathews compound bow, Redhead carbon shafts, 100 gr. Thunderheads)

I'd like to go hunting. But I don't know anyone in Colorado, and non-resident licenses for Wyoming (where my in-laws live) are too expensive for me right now.

not going this year. in a new state and not sure where to hunt ... although the AFB nearby always has a ton of deer around. i wonder if the air force would mind me shooting one. :ninja: :hmm:

I went last weekend (10/24). Planned for 4 days, but had my deer down in the first 30 minutes. I was racing the clock due to the impending snowstorm, so the fast tag-out worked out for me. Whitetail doe, Remington 7mm Mag using handloaded 162gr Hornady bullets. Good luck and be safe to all headed out this season.

Sometimes military bases offer controlled hunts on the property to manage deer populations. Check it out.

Get to go this weekend in Northern MN. Using a Remington .30-06 with 165 grain bullets. I think they're 165 anyways.

Can't wait!

Hope to make it middle of the month in upper Nebraska.

Cant decide. I've got the '06 with ammo for it. The 270 would be fun to try as well, and I would get a kick out of hunting with my old Swiss K31. I really want to try out my .44 Mag rifle though too.

Too many guns, too few deer.

Move to MN! Lol! Last season we could tag up to 5 - 1 Antler and 4 Antlerless. Not sure what the limits are this year.

same here (don't remember the grain though) 3-9x scope hunting on my cousins 240 acres. Maybe I'll get da tirty point buck this year. 🙂

I didn't get a license this year. Got one last year and only went out one day, which happened to be like the coldest day of the year! That was the 1st time I went hunting in several years. I didn't even see anything. Didn't stay out long either though.

I used a .270 that day.

Yeah it is a little overkill. Fun gun though.

I should talk. I have a .300 Winchester Magnum in my safe...that thing is a brute. I put a better recoil pad on it and a compensator which really helped tame the recoil. I've gone armed hiking with it twice. Never bagged anything though.

My dad has one of those. It is one of the best all around hunting guns, if not THE best. Tons of power but very manageable and reasonably cheap to load.

Archery hunting is what I prefer.
Not going this year, just dont have the time, though my mom made it tempting. Talked to her yesterday and she was telling me how every night about midnight she has deer in her front yard and how there was this huge buck there with giant antlers almost every night. She lives right on the edge of the woods in a very rural area of eastern NC and the deer like to eat from her garden.

Been out several times archery for hog/deer since september. No kills. Gun came in a few weeks ago and went that weekend. Saw 3, 2 bucks chasing a doe thru the swamp, but never had a shot or could really see their racks. Going out this coming weekend. Hopefully the rut hasn't stopped yet.

I'm not a hunter but last winter one of my co-workers brought in his new toy. A "calling" machine. He was showing off the 10's of calls when we noticed that all these birds were circling the area. Pretty cool, until we decided that probably not a good thing since we were standing next to the runway at a AF base 🙂

I'm rather fond of it. It was a beast though when I bought it. I was sighting it in and had a hard time not flinching when I'd pull the trigger. The more I shot it the worse it got until I had the recoil pad changed and the compensator installed. It is soooo much easier to shoot it accurately now.

I bought it used and I suspect the previous owner only fired it a few times because it looked brand new when I bought it. He probably had a tough time dealing with the recoil I'm guessing. The pad that comes with it was maybe 1/2" thick. I put a 1" decelerator pad on there and it looks like the gun came with it. They place that installed the compensator blued it to match the barrel perfectly. It looks as good as it shoots and it is very accurate.
