Deer meat - best way to cook.

Thinly sliced ... batter lightly with flour/garlic powder, and fry for about a minute in butter. So good. If you grill it, don't overcook it, or it'll be a bit tougher than you might expect.

I love deer burger. Deer sausage. Deer jerky. Deer roast. Deer snack sticks.

But I can't really get into deer steak. It's just too lean and "gamey" for me. It's just got an off flavor and not enough fat marble to it to eat as one small alternator chunk of meat. There just really isn't much you can do for it without sauces/marinades to correct that.

Filet, looks great. I might just add salt and pepper and grill it.
For deer it's called the backstrap. Technically deer don't have filets (more correctly, a tenderloin cut). In reality it's the same damn thing.

Enjoy 'em. When cooked right they are the best filets you'll ever have. 🙂

marinading it, like any lean cut of meat, does make it taste delicious though.
and like the OP did, i also like it best grilled. the tenderloin, after being marinated a few days and then grilled is 5 star.

we also have venison jerky, slimjims, and sausage made.

I made some venison fajitas and they were wonderful! The venison flavor really complimented the fajita seasoning.

Over the years, I've had 1 or 2 deer that tasted as you describe. The rest didn't have an "off" flavor & wasn't too gamey. No matter what I did, I just didn't like the flavor of the steaks. But, it's been a long time since I've had venison that I didn't like. The same is true of beef - it doesn't all taste the same. Some tastes awesome, the rib eyes at my local grocery store, when they're on sale for $5.98 a pound, taste horrible - twice I've ended up just feeding them to my dogs. (I've learned not to buy them.)

Deer meat is sooooooooo good.
I love the way my brother's father-in-law cooks it; shredded with some heavy seasoning, garlic and bbq sauce.
