Serious response (for once). Deer actually make a barking sound to communicate over long distance. They do this more in the evenings or at night. I went camping by the lake last October and heard this noise at around 4:30am right outside my tent. I thought it sounded like a bird, but then heard their hooves hitting the ground. I was picturing a large turkey vulture-sized bird outside the tent hopping around. It wasn't until the next day that my mother suggested it was probably deer making the sound.
