I bought an external Firewire IEEE-1394 CD-RW to go with my Laptop.

I connect the CD-RW to my PCMCIA IEEE-1394 adapter (from Billionton) which is hooked up to my Laptop.
I have verified that both Adapter and CD-RW (even when used together) work perfectly with another Laptop.
There I just plugged them both in and it worked ... with my Laptop I have HUGE problems.

The CD-RW shows up in Device Manager and I can view the contents of the CD or use them for some time (usually around 30 seconds) then WHAM my system starts to hang and nothing goes anymore.

If I try to burn CDs using Nero (which came along with the drive) it starts burning (yes, it actually burns something onto the disc) but again after a few seconds it gives me an "Unspecified Recorder Error" and aborts.

Mysteriously I have no problems at all to erase CD-RWs.

Also I have verified that the CD-RW and CD-R media that I use work perfectly at the other Laptop with the same drive/setup.

Furthermore I have updated all ASPI drivers and I am running XP with SP1 and all Updates installed.

Any ideas what is the source of the problem? How can I solve this?

I have three external 1394 burners - one of them I use with my laptop. However - the laptop 1394 port is a 4-wire port, and is truly intended for connecting digital cameras or camcorders. In order to use a burner successfully, you must have an external power brick for the burner. If your Device Manager shows everything OK, and you can see the CD/RW as a lettered drive, and access regular CDs, you should be able to "burn."

There are some techniques that I would recommend. First, never use Direct CD or something akin to that. Avoid packet recording - create a CD burn folder on your HDD and build you complete CD there before burning. Then when it is ready, use "Disk at Once" burn methodology. That way you'll rarely go wrong.

Lastly, the problem you describe could be a faulty or internmittantly faulty cable. Try a different one.

All the hardware is fine ... I have used it successfully with a friends Laptop.
Nero doesn't use packet burning.

Most of the time the Device Manager shows the Device (as working), it gets a drive letter and I can (barely access) it for about 30 seconds or so ... then it brings down my system until I disconnect the Drive.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Yes.
I tested everything!

It looks like the firewire-bus is reset after some moments of use????
Because it DOES work for a few seconds but then it stops ....

In the Log-file this seems to be the section with the error:

6:13:05 PM #18 SCSI -1 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1398
SCSI Exec, HA 1, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x04780000

I have looked all over the net but could find nobody else with an SCSI_ERR and KEY_NO_SENSE error without anything else ....

Any ideas.
PLEASE guys, I'm baffled!

Have you even considered the possibility that YOUR laptop is faulty? If you can obtain different specimens of the same equipment, do so. Try them with your laptop. If they fail as well, your laptop is at fault.

Could resource management be the cause? Background apps?

Have you tried to repair/reinstall the OS?

I ran into a few problems with a customer's usb 2.0 drive sometime ago... the reinstall solved it. =/

I also noticed that the customer had the "I know everything about computers" attitude, so I am sure he or some program he had on it changed some settings in the registry trying to "optimize" his machine... I noticed he removed all of his optimizing programs that he said he once had on there.

Good luck.

I tried changing from an ACPI system to a Standard PC in Device Manager and it did not help either (except the machine was really unstable and I changed it back)

I can't see how my laptop could be at fault since the PCMCIA slot is work totally fine otherwise ...

All the hardware is fine ... I have used it successfully with a friends Laptop.

If it worked properly on your friends laptop then you have ruled out the external burner and card as an issue, the only thing you need to focus on is your laptop. The problem lies within your laptop it could be some conflict, or it may just be that it dosen't work with your laptop.

Ive seen something like this somewhere ....There was a BIOS fix for a laptop that would have intermitten Firewire connectivity. Look up your laptops vendor and find the newest BIOS update for it and try it out.

Different PCMCIA slots have different voltages, I know on my fiances laptop there is a 3.3V and a 5V(i think it's 5V) and if you plug her external CDrom into the 3.3V slot it doesn't read anything it just spins the disk around.

Read your manual and figure out if your PCMCIA slot supports it, and stop putting down other peoples help, I mean you don't know how to fix it and you have the hardware in front of you. How do expect someone who has no idea what laptop or firewire card you have to be able to fix the problem without ever seeing the problem.

Maybe the problem is between the laptop & the chair.😉
