I had never known that. Wow.
Since this thread is now including "*hit you might have missed" I will toss in the "covert space denial LEM". Grumman, (the LEM contractor), had spent considerable time + $ developing the lunar module, in an effort to sell more of them they proposed a "covert op's" version for use in earth orbit. The LEM would be equipped with a mechanical arm that could be used to disable enemy satellites by grabbing them and slinging them downward into a death-plunge. It could also be used to rip off solar panels or simply spray-paint a satellite black. A black satellite would quickly overheat, since it can no longer reflect away sunlight. The 1967 treaty signed by both the US+USSR forbid this type of activity however, and probably for the better, once the USSR found out it's satellite's had fallen victim to a LEM attack they would no doubt come up with their own method of damaging ours.

Wow. I've heard of satellite battles with lasers but not this. Fascinating. Loss of satellites nowadays would bring down a lot of things. When we invent things, we think of ways to destroy them. I once made a sandcastle, I think I was four. It was bigger than my "friend's," he smashed mine with his foot.

Actually, the USSR was super paranoid of the US doing this kind of crap so they equipped their satellites with self-destruct capability if anything abnormal was detected, kind of a bummer if the satellite your trying to disable explodes 5ft away from you!.
