Dedicated Server

Hey all,

Right now I've got a dedicated server at my company. We're an ISP, and I just setup a simple 1U in the network room. However, part of me is getting uncomforatable with having a personal server with my personal files stored at my place of work. Its not that the job is unstable, its just that I feel its a conflict of interest.

I'm tempted to just skip eating out one week per month and suck it up and get the $65 server at LayeredTech. Yeah, I'd be paying for something that I get for free at work, but it would make me more comforatable knowing my personal stuff wasn't stored at work.

What's everyone think? Opinions? Am I over-reacting?

My boss knows I have it, and no... I don't have anything illegal on it. I just have my personal email on it.

you are an ISP? that means all the shared/web hosting has other peoples stuff on it, how is it any different?

I dunno..... I think I'd still be uncomforatable.

Techincally speaking, any emails sents from the account that your work pays for are their intellectual property, just as if you write code on their time it's their property.

Stop using work email address for personal communication. Get a GMail account and just foward all of your personal emails there, then delete them off of work space.

Or, depending on the size of your email, just use a portable/external hard drive to store your email data on.

I think that came out wrong.

I have my PERSONAL email account stored on my PERSONAL server at work, which is provided to me free of charge as an unofficial handshake agreement. In fact, I had the server even before I started working here...

Then, I have my work email, which I only use for work.

The point is... that at any point, we could go under. Or i could quit. Or I could move. I wouldn't want the fact that all of my websites and emails were stored on location at my current job. I just think separating them would be a good idea, and $60/month isn't really that big of a deal.

I would get an LT server if you are a capable server admin.

Very capable. I run the one at the office here with no problems. And LT is where I was looking... hence the $65/month server price.

My main question:

Is it worth $65/month to not have to deal with my server at work on a handshake agreement (such as if I leave, get fired, etc.)...

Make sure everything is password protected and legally they can't sell or withhold what belongs to you. Just make sure that you have documentation to back up that it belongs to you, and you could put a piece of masking tape on top that says "property of __________" to make sure it's not mistaken for company property.


If $65/mo is no big deal to you then by all means, do it. But if it means you put an extra burden on your wallet, there are work-arounds.

Thats the thing ... is the server is completely a handshake agreement. I don't like having my personal life at my work... it kinda bugs me.

I think I'm gonna go ahead with the server. Actually, my uncle offered to split it with me... so its only $30/month now ... WELL worth it.
