I encrpyted a few files on my windows2000 system a while back and last month I formatted my boot drive and would like to get these files back. I can see them but can't open them or read them. Is there a recovery tool or something that I can use ? Or am I SOL :( ?

Thanks,

Yah, I stored some personal files on NSA's network, could you retrieve them for me? Thanks!

Seriously though, if these really are *your* files, you'll need to know the cipher used. In order to encrypt something, a cipher is used (the algorithm used to actually encode the data, it becomes ciphertext), you'll need to know which one. DES, 3DES, RC4, Twofish, AES, ad nauseum...

[edit]Oh, and note, just because you know the cipher doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to decipher them. That is, of course, unless you have discovered immortality and infinite processing power.[/edit]

You are SOL.

I made the same mistake at one time.

Only encrypt files if you are certain that you know what you are doing, and have the keys backed up.

I made this mistake too, but I had the files unencrypted on this RAR archive on a CD-ROM, so it was all good.
