decrypting a rar file?

I did once...wasn't really expecting to succeed but the password turned out to be 3 characters long, lucky me.

Good luck with that one. The good news is WinRAR uses a max encryption strength of AES-128 rather than AES-256 or AES-512. The bad news is, even AES-128 is a bitch to break.

So no, without the password your chances of getting access to that file are slim to none.

Best you can probably do is brute force it with a dictionary, and hope they didn't use anything too complicated (like a-z, A-Z, 8 chars max)

Is it something you found online? Try searching for its md5 hash, might give some interesting results.

yeah, i am doing more and more searches all the time. even complicated regular questions in english seem to give good results these days. it's amazing what search engines find and didn't think of this interesting angle.
