I went to my stepdaughter's graduation Saturday at the U of F, and noticed a wierd thing, seems those krazy kids are decorating the tops of their graduation caps. Flourescents, letters, signs, etc.

I really didn't care for it, I feel it takes away from a somewhat sacred procedure.

Any thought?

(For the slow ones, a "mortarboard" is what one calls the square cap/tassle that graduates wear. ;))

At first glance I thought that said motherboards.

I don't think it should be done. If they want to make a statement and be different why wear a cap and gown at all. Why not just wear a t-shirt with whatever logo they want on it.

I agree its unnecessary. Personally I'm not interested in the ceremony and won't be attending mine. Congrats to your stepdaughter btw :)

Heh, I thought it said "motherboard" too.

It does seem a bit unstately and disrespectful. The only time it might be appropriate is if the student has been sponsered throught the education process then they could place a logo on there, like the race cars do now.

My sister is about to graduate. A friend of hers, graduating the same year but from a different school, bought an actual gong for her parents to bang when she walks.

Forget air horns. The gong has style.

I graduated in a class of 4000+ in a stadium. Me and my friends each had one letter of "Hi Mom" on our mortarboards so that our parents knew where we were. Plenty of people did far more creative things. It's all in good fun. As to the sacredness? 100 years ago when only the rich went to university and the world was more conservative it would have been frowned upon. In today's world, Most HS grads go to college and graduation has become more of a celebration and rite of passage than solemn intitiation into the elite.

People putting stickers on motherboard are idiots :D

Mortarboards on the other hand is simply a matter of how you look at the ceremony.

I agree. All of us went through one heck of a lot of crap to get that degree, and that day is supposed to be fun! It's a celebration of the end of one phase of our life, and the entrance into the next.

Granted, i'm sure my parents would have wanted to see a solemn and respectable ceremony, but I think that deep down, they are happy to see my graduate too, and realise that this is more fun than being all quiet and solemn.

:p

It can damage the motherboard if you decorate it... uhm wait, you said mortarboards? Well, in that case,

It's a too small thing to make so much noise about. Not even worth it to discuss it. Besides, those mortarboards are only common in the US, in Europe you won't see this very soon.

Nothing really wrong with it per se, although I would prefer it if they waited until just after the ceremony.

The only real problem I can see is where to draw the line as to what is allowed and what isn't.
First it's initials and flowers and such. I can easily see that deteriorating into 'Ford Rules', 'Gay Pride', 'Straight Pride', Black, White, Asian, Mexican, KKK, etc.
I would not want to have to be the one to draw the line.
