Decoding?

Is there a way to decode a file encoded in xvid or divx so that it can be played on a computer (school computer) without those codecs?

One way would be to open it in a video editing program (like Adobe Premiere) and re-encode it using a different codec... not sure if there is an easier way.

Sure, but you need some codec to play it in otherwise the file would be huge.

should be able to drag it into windows movie maker and turn it into a wmv too

You would still need a MPEG codec on the machine, which Windows doesn't come with.
