I need to pull this processor from a board that went sour. How can i tell what kind of replacement board to buy?

most likely a northwood, which were 478. Prescotts have a higher clock and use different a socket.

It's clearly a P4 because , 1. Its a dell therefore its a pentium, 2. 2.6GHZ 3. Its got a 533MHZ FSB so that rules out 423PIN socket. The only pentium 4 with a 533MHZ FSB running at 2.6GHZ is a socket 478 processor.

Thanks. 1 more quick question. Im also pulling some kingston value ram for a new SFF system. The ram is DDR266/ 256mn stick . When i shop for mATX boards, i choose s478 with what memory identification? pc2100, pc2700..... pc #### what do those numbers mean?

Because it is a 2.66 GHz on a 533mhz bus is the first clue (not always accurate though)
Socket 478 has Pins on the chip and the socket has holes. Socket 478 is made of plastic.

Socket 775 is made of metal. The CPU for that socket has no PINS like 478 does. The socket instead has pins sticking out of it. Socket 775 is also Intel's newest socket that is less than 18 months old.

The other poster is correct when saying the chip is probably a Northwood Core, because it is a NORTHWOOD CORE! There are some Prescott P4's that used 533mhz bus and are 775 or 478, but they are not too common. Most Prescott's sold were the 800mhz bus.

No willamettes were ever made using 478. Older 400mhz Bus processors (Williamette) were Socket 423. And Pentium 3 is socket 370. AMD Athlon XP is Socket 462. Newer AMD Athlon 64's Are Socket 940, 939, and Socket 754

Socket 478(socket)
Socket 478 CPU

Socket 775(socket)
Socket 775 CPU

I have seen plenty of DELL motherboards for sale on ebay, all you need is the exact model number for the board you have or the model of DELL PC. Try searching twice using both model numbers with the term "Motherboard" in the search. Any 533mhz Bus processor will work with this PC.

If I were you, I'd go with a Northwood 3.0 478. It's very expensive now (Intel's trying to get people to migrate over to LGA 775, so they jacked up the price), but it runs cool. Don't get a 3.0E 478 Prescott unless you want to deal with hot room temps (like me)

There are 40 socket 478 microATX mboards available at NewEgg.
I think you'd want one with a chipset that can run the memory dual channel to double the memory bandwidth and with an 800FSB as well as a 533FSB for the possibility of future CPU upgrade, like one of the i865 chipsets.

BTW what are the measurements of the 4600c mboard? One of the Dell Optiplex GX270 boards might fit the case.

max. dimensions for motherboard standards:
ATX 12" x 9.6"
Mini ATX 11.2" x 8.2"
microATX 9.6" x 9.6"
FlexATX 9" x 7.5"

PC#### - the ####=theoretical bandwidth. Usually with 533FSB CPU you can run memory up to 333MHz. It may be possible to run memory at a faster speed if the chipset and BIOS allow or not - I don't know enough to say for sure. You can use any 184pin DDR memory in any 478 socket mboard but the chipset-FSB, BIOS and CPU-FSB may limit what speed you'll be able to run the memory at.
PC2100=DDR266
PC2700=DDR333
PC3200=DDR400
PC3500=DDR433

No, they didn't jack up the price they stopped making them.

He has a DELL chasis, I dont think that one of those motherboards will work with his computer.
