Decline in people wearing suits and is it a bad thing?

I've been to several weddings and a couple of funerals in the last couple of years and have been surprised by the increasing number of people who no longer dress up for these occasions. As the most recent funeral I was at, maybe only half of the men there were wearing a suit. There were a number wearing just a dress shirt (no tie) and a couple wearing jeans.

Maybe this is stodgy old-timey thinking but IMO there are 3 events where you should generally wear a suit: weddings\funerals\job interviews. I think, in addition to looking sharp it shows the event was important enough to spend the time to look nice instead of rolling in wearing everyday clothes. It adds a touch of class and respect

But maybe I am slipping into the 'damn kids these days' phase of my life

I agree. All three are in decline though. People show up to job interviews wearing sports jerseys now.

Couldn't agree with you more. It's a sign that the event is important to you to take the time to get dressed in a nice suit.

I attended a wedding this summer where somone showed up in jorts and a t-shirt. A few other people's idea of "formal" was also a polo, jeans, and sneakers. Not joking. :'(

Suits are stupid. It's the Apple form over function model. A tie that keeps nothing together, and a jacket that doesn't keep you warm, but does make you hot. One can look good without wearing a uniform.

Agreed. Although, I don't wear ties anymore. A nice jacket and slacks with a button down shirt (or maybe a nice v neck t-shirt) and dress shoes.

They don't make you look sharp...they make you look like a clone.

It has gotten bad enough that it's common to have to specify formal attire on the invite.

black suits are for funerals, if we stop wearing suits at funerals then what is the point of black suits :hmm:

I love suits, I wish I had a reason for wearing one every day. I'm planning a trip to the suitsupply store in Hamburg, might even have my measurements taken so I can get a properly tailored one.

whenever I go drinking the rest of the world is always ridiculously underdressed :colbert:

but yeah, weddings/funerals demands a suit, job interviews depend on where you're interviewing but it's hard to overdress.

BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T WEAR AN ILL FITTING SUIT!!!!

Funeral is probably the only one where I see it's recommended. Job interview and wedding can vary greatly.

I've seen that too but it wasn't all that surprising given who was getting married and where :p

Spending a large amount of money on a set of garmets you will rarely wear seems like a bad idea to me.

You don't have to spend a lot of money and it you take proper care of them (and don't change dimensions) they can last a long time

They don't make you look sharp...they make you look like a clone.

I have yet to be at an event where everyone is wearing the same style and color of dress shirt, tie, shoes etc

There are plenty of ways to differentiate yourself.

Where I work, the only people that wear suits are the lawyers and on-air presenters. Most workplaces have gone business casual because it's more practical. I can't stand wearing a tie myself.

At a funeral though...
I think it shows a great disrespect to the family and the deceased if you can't bother your ass to come looking half presentable.
