Decking the walls

The walls in my house are bare as shit, and need a little flare. Has anyone purchased discount artwork online? Reprints? Cheap oils from nobodies? I'm not really in the market for dropping a lot of cash on this, but I suspect there are some more cost-effective options.

Frames are where you always end up sinking money.

If you have any photography you want to showcase, you could go to one of the canvas print companies and get those...16x20 or 18x24 inch canvases go for like $35 shipped from time to time. Those don't require frames to look good.

I went to the Kirklands like places and bought a few prints years ago that looked rather masculine... Pictures of bars with a nice dark frame around them. My wife hates them, but they look classy in a bachelor pad. I'm waiting to finish my man cave so I can hang them up again behind the wet bar.

Which rooms specifically?

In my entertainment/game room I have abysmal wallpaper. But hanging some nice, classic full size movie posters make things less bleak and less of an eyesore.

Obviously wouldn't do that in a living room probably (unless you're going for the "Home Theater" feeling, up to you)

Make sure whatever it is has some sentimental or artistic value to you, personally, since you're going to be having to look at it day in day out.

ebay is great for art pieces. tons of starving artists are selling one of a kind pieces there and stuff from Chinese artists directly China (some of these are mass produced thou).

OP do you have any basic woodworking skills? and by that i just mean gluing/nailing 4 pieces of wood boether heh.

a while back i made some accoustical panels for my HT, but since then i've made some "frames" to hang up around the house in places that were bare on the wall as well, with pictures of my wife and myself, and just other cool things.

the 3'x2' pictures that i made ran me about $30 total to make with wood + fabric that i printed from spoonflower.com. on that same piece of fabric i had space to also print out 2 more 14"x16" pictures so i made 2 that size as well, with the same cost spent above.

For clarification, I am looking to enhance the main living, entry way (lots of wall space), formal dining, and above my mantel.

I did a lot of woodworking with my dad when I was younger, but unfortunately, going that route would require purchasing tools that I don't currently have. Sadly there are other purchases that have higher priority 🙁

+1 for photos printed on canvas. Convert some, and they don't need frames, they wrap the printed canvas around the edge.

Yard sales, moving sales, estate sales & Craigslist.

This, also thrift shops. It might take a little while to find something you really like, but art can be had cheaply. If you want to spend real money, go to local art and craft shows(not urban shows). Those usually run spring through summer, and you can get nice art from local artists, that while not cheap, won't be bank breaking either.

If you have a decent printer you can just print out some of your own pics and put them in frames that you build or buy from your local arts & crafts store.

Another: I live in a college town and many of the bars and restaurants have taken to putting up works from local artists, often with prices. For them it's artwork for free. One bar in particular - I think one of the bartenders is an artist - changes the artwork frequently and even does "shows" of single artists. They have a couple of 15' high walls covered with anywhere from 50 to 80 different works. A lot of it is garbage, but some of it is pretty amazing. I've bought a couple of pieces. Prices are very negotiable.

Bed Bath & Beyond has nice art stuff. Check it out.

Who are some of your favorite artists? Reprints of well known artists can be found fairly cheap. Also you don't need paintings to decorate your walls.
Here are some examples of other pieces we have in our house.

Even framed mirrors can add a nice touch.🙂

Make it your own.

You can buy poster sized art prints online for $20-30 and then get a frame from Hobby Lobby or Michael's for another $20-30 (pro-tip: frames are 50% off just about every other week).

Yeah, Hobby Lobby has a coupon online for 50% off all the time. I have a collection of pilot wings I stuck in a display case.

The wife and I have bought some items from icanvas.com. They look pretty good.

Also - groupon frequently has deals on wall art.

That's kind of what I did. I had some of my best photos printed out as 11x14" prints by Adorama (you can get some pretty cool effects with different paper styles) and then picked up some cheap frames to hang them with.
