So, in 2 weeks I will be starting a new job. The commute will be a dramatic change and I need some advice. Currently, I have a 28 mile round trip with 1/2 of it being twisty back roads. The rest are divided 4 lanes roads with varying amounts of traffic. Each day, I can really get on my car in certain parts and enjoy driving it. I typically do a fill-up a week and spend around $240/month in gas at current prices.

The new job is now 80 mile round trip and will be all freeway. Unfortunately, it's Atlanta traffic, meaning stop and go. Having done this drive on occasion, I know my gas usage will double easily.

Here are the options, keep the CTS-V, buy a second car (used Honda Civic), sell the V and get a Prius, or take the buss and garage the V. If I do take the buss, I would still consider selling the car and getting a better ride for the fiance.

What say you ATG?

Sell the CTS-V and buy a new commuter. Get a manufactuer's extended warranty for 100-120k miles.

stop and go is where hybrids really excel, and you will get great mileage. However if it means selling the fun car for the weekends, I would probably balk at the idea and buy the cheapest used civic i can get :)

Since you know how to wrench get an older civic or any other high mileage slave.

You could totally get away with getting a older saturn for 1500 bucks and be set.

Since you havent had the V for long would you miss it terribly?

I don't understand how you can go from a V to a prius without anything for the weekend. You've gotta have some fun right???

Keep the V, move closer to work?

That's phase two, but the fiance will have to find a new job. She's a teacher, so making her drive an 80 mile round trip at this time isn't worth it. I'm trying to get her to quit and pick up a part time job since I make enough to support us both. Unfortunately, she's really into teaching and doesn't want to do that.
