Getting ready to format my computer.. Just wanted everyones opinion on this matter..

I have the ASUS P4B266 with the
C-Media CMI8738 6-Channel Audio Controller (But I have it disabled)

I have been running an Aureal SQ2500 Vortex 2 for a while now..

I'm wondering.. which source of sound would be better? The Vortex 2 or the C-Media CMI8738 ??

I run Windows 98 & Windows ME, and also Windows 2000 and Windows XP
I'm also going to dual boot with Suse 8.0 Linux.

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

get an oem SB audigy for around $60 online...it comes with an free IEE94... i have a turtle beach santa cruz also... in my opinion the SB audigy sounds better ----higher treble and lower bass.. :) i had a SB live value before, i got rid of it because of many issues like crackling, etc...

SB audigy=has a treble/bass control
Turtle Beach= has an equalizer -type adjustment

it's your choice..... :)

Don't know/not sure about the SB cards, but the TB Santa Cruz works with linux. Not as many features as you would have with windows, but it works.

I am just giving you a warning...do not get a phillips Acoustic Edge if you want sound in Linx, caue it aint going to happen, ever, with that card.

C-media 8738 has better support. C-media have Lunix drivers (as well as BeOS!!) on their web site www.cmedia.com.tw. Note that VXD drivers for Windows 98 (original), have stoped being produced. This is going to be common in the future with all hardware as Win 98 original goes into its "unsupported" phase.

The WDM drivers for Win 98 SE, Me, Win 2000, and XP though, are quite mature, and offer full Sensaura 3D API, so it supports EAX 1, 2, A3D 1, I3DL2, MacroFX and Zoom FX.

You may as well enable the 8738 and at least give it a try, it's better then most people think.

Cheers

the CMI is better since there are no support for Vortex cards. and if you consider upgrading, get TB santa cruz or audigy (not sure about linux drivers though)
