Decision between 6600 and 6600GT

I'm close to ordering a Geforce 6600GT based card. From what I see, the difference between 6600 and 6600GT is that 6600GT has a faster clock speed.

One user said that the GT sucks because 6600GT uses system RAM rather than VRAM.
Is this true? Or is he bluffing? I don't think this con would be any big deal anyway.

The video card I'm getting is MSI NX6600GT-VTD128SP, because it has GDDR3 memory, VIVO and HDTV capability; plus, it comes bundle with the game Riddick. 🙂

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forums...

No, the 6600GT does not use system RAM. Cards that do so are the GeForce 6200 TurboCache and ATI HyperMemory cards. If it does use system RAM though, you would notice a dramatic decrease in performance. But that's not the case with the 6600GT.

The 6600 isn't a very good card at all, but the 6600GT is very decent. Sounds good. What games will you be playing, and at what settings do you typically play?

Doom3, Half-Life2, UT2004 and the like. I usually use medium settings since I currently have 512MB of RAM, and I just like to have a balance between quality and performance.

OK. You shouldn't be disappointed with the 6600GT then... what resolution do you play at though? If its 1280x1024 or under I don't think you'll have much a problem with any of those. AnandTech has a review here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2277
