Deciding to possibly sell spare computer

Specs:

440BX/ZX Series Gigabyte motherboard
Sound Blaster card (I think)
100 meg network card (d-link)
ATI 8 meg video card.
512 megs of SD RAM.
Antec Sonata case (less then a year old, it cost me 140 bucks for case/psu but there is another psu in there right now).

How much do you think this is worth?

I have my p4 - 2.8 c doing nothing right now, but hooking it back up when school is done in May, right now my bro uses his celeron 2.4 and my sisters their xp 1600+ hahahaha

Do you try to sell it? Give it away? Or keep it just in case you MIGHT need it later on (although space is a bit hard to find)

PS: It's a p3-450.

can you add 'give it to dug777 so he can play with it' to the poll 😉

it had linux on it.

Now i've got a newer machine with linux on it.

I just don't have really any room to hook this one up.

I already have 4 computers (5 with this one)

If I needed money desperately, I'd sell it.
If I didn't need money and had room on my network, I'd use it for DC cycles.
If putting it on the network wasn't viable, I'd store it away for parts.
I probably wouldn't "destroy" it. I build and repair computers all the time, breaking shit (on purpose) is one of the benefits of the job.

Give it away. If you don't need it now, there will never be a time when you need it later.

Not that my closet resembles that advice, mind you, but I am trying 🙂

P3 450 I'd give away if I could find anyone to take it.

I keep any decent spare parts I have until I have enough to build another computer, at which point I'll either do something with it (file server, HTPC, etc) or give it away.

I am in the process of this right now. I have 2 older AMD machines, 1.0 and 1.33 with GeForce 2s in them. Both have XP Pro on them. I am giving one away and I am not sure about the other. I think it needs a mobo (have one on hand) and I can't find the disk or key for it's copy of XP Pro but I know it's here somewhere.

That's a damn good idea, and I'll probably keep my P3 1Ghz and old vid card for that, but if I really haven't got the space for an extra box, how am I going to fit a cabinet in here?

I know what you mean, I had 8 computers and forced myself to give 2 away.

My apartment started looking like a geek shop.

Now I have a friend who has 6 computers and doesn't know what to do with half of them lol

I cannot express how wrong you are.
Well if you are desperately strapped for cash, perhaps, but whatever future event he needs it for could be met by the expenditure of less than $50 .. not worth cluttering up an apartment/dorm for that sort of eventuality

Not only that...but I can't think of too many ladies who would feel comfortable in a place littered with computer parts everywhere. I do not want to be known as "the" geek.

I am giving one to the grandkids (5 y.o. twins) so thye can play Spongebob or some such crap.

I have the same problem. I have 3 machines - one A64 2800+ machine (using now) and 2 others in the closet - both AMD, one xp2400 and one xp2200. Both are VERY usable machines, but I don't have the space anymore to have a network set up like I used to 🙁. So, there they sit - until I move into a bigger place and can set them all up like I had before. One has Linux on it (I was playing with it - trying to learn, cause I don't know crap about Linux), the other is XP Pro that I used for a backup / file server.

I guess for basic home use, you're right. But when you work with this stuff for a living, and you have designated STORAGE, then "there will never be a time when you need it later" is completely illogical. Also, there have been plenty of times I've thrown something away and a week later totally regretted it. Things you can't readily buy, either.
