Deciding on DroidX/HTC DI, or wait?

Hey all, I currently have an upgrade available through Verizon, so grabbing the Incredible or Droid X will only cost me $200. Right now I have an LG Dare (sucks), and I've never had a smartphone, so this would obviously be new and different territory for me.

I've researched hard, and the DroidX seems to be the clear winner as long as you don't mind the larger size (I don't).

However, I believe my upgrade window lasts until October/November. Is there anything new coming along that I can wait for (not in a huge rush, never had a smartphone), or should I jump on one of these two?

Well I just assumed that I couldn't get one of the upgrade deals once it's been 2 years + since I started the contract. I thought I had from now until approximately mid November to upgrade or not get a deal like that at all.

That's what I get for assuming though if it's not true.

Your New Every Two will last until you choose to use it. My last one I waited for 6+ months to use it after my contract end date while I waited for some new phones.

Ahh ok thanks. Will the Droid 2 or anything else upcoming soon be worth the wait? Or will DroidX suffice for a long time?

Me personally I'd go with the Droid X or the Incredible(this is what I have now) depending on your preference in size.

I think there are a few phones upcoming for VZ though such as the Droid 2 like you mentioned and also the Samsung Galaxy S variant later on.

If you want a keyboard I'd wait for the Droid 2, if not I'd get Droid X/incredible and not even worry about it. They are both great phones.

Yeah, I had my new every two for...geez about two years....vzw just didn't have anything i wanted .

Have a Droid X myself...LOVE it, and this is coming from a very very firm hardware keyboard guy, the large screen makes the software keyboard work sooo well.

Go into a store and try it, I think you'll be thoroughly impressed.

Droid 2 looks to be the same exact size as the droid 1 for the most part, just upgraded internals. So the same 3.7" screen. I'd imagine the 1 Ghz processor is a pretty welcome upgrade, the Incredible at 1 Ghz feels much faster compared to the Droid 1.

yes the Droid2 has the same 3.7in screen as the original Droid.

The 1ghz proc is a nice performance boost, the X and the D2 use the same chipset so performance should be identical (maybe better depending on the pixel density of the X's bigger screen).

You should choose neither, if you value the value of the open platform. Both the Droid X and Droid 2 have signed boot loaders, making custom roms nearly impossible and even root access incredibly difficult. The only way for Motorola and Verizon to stop that crap is for people to stop buying those locked down products.

The Droid X and Droid 2 have incredible hardware, but they need to be boycotted by everyone until Moto and Big Red get with the program.

I'd look at the Samsung Fascinate, which should launch late this summer/early fall on Verizon. If the other Galaxy S siblings are indications, it will have easy root and an open boot loader.

If you want to actually own your device, neither of those devices should be purchased. With them being locked down, you're renting them. They are not yours and never will be yours.

Look at the Samsung Fascinate.

But you do need to worry about the trend. You don't want Android phones to go down that path. You should always have the choice and freedom to with the device what you will.

I like the way it felt, the materials, the weight, the size - they were all nice. But it just felt so choppy compared to the incredible next to it. Any X owners want to comment if the software update helped that? Is it a blur problem or what?

I liked that with the incredible you can pinch and have all your open stuff show up on the home screen. Does the X have multi-touch?

I really wanted to get the X as a first smart phone but I was a bit let down. It even took forever to move into landscape mode when it was turned.

I'm in the same boat as the Op. I'm up for an upgrade from my LG Dare (Feature Phones Suck) and have been debating between the Droid X and Incredible. They both seem comparable in specs, except screen size, though for some reason I REALLY like the Sense UI, and also I feel like I want to get into the rooting scene as I like tinkering with my hardware.

My experience was with an employees phone. I mentioned the long time to change to landscape while typing so the rep brought out one of the salespersons phones. He had launcherpro installed. I could tell that it was faster than the public demo unit but even then the slight choppiness was there.

This isn't to say that it isnt a great phone. Indeed, websites and apps loaded insanely fast. I would just like a better home screen experience and the incredible seemed smoother when switching in between things. On build quality, though, it is nowhere close to the X.

edit: also, the reason i mentioned the update was because I remember reading about it. thought that might have improved things. I couldn't use swype properly but I uess that is something that requires getting used to.

The Droid X has better battery life than the Incredible, takes better pictures, takes better video, gets better reception, has better call quality, is more solidly manufactured(doesn't feel cheap like the Incredible does), has more than twice the 3D performance, CPU is around 50% more powerful, Droid X has over 6GB of dedicated app storage, Incredible has around 700MB, X has an HDMI out port, X has noise cancellation with 3 microphones.

Sense UI is hit and miss. It is nice in some ways but terribly annoying and worse than vanilla android in other ways.

Android 2.0 and later is multitouch capable. the Droid X has a multitouch keyboard confirmed. It's just up to Moto and Google and any software developer to implement multitouch features in their software.

The DroidX is just as capable of multitouch as the Droid Incredible is.

The question is what are you going to wait for? The Droid 2 seems too similar to the Droid 1. There's also no telling if the bootloader will come locked like a Milestone/Droid X. The DROID is so moddable, I don't think you lose anything by going with it. A 1ghz DROID is faster clock for clock than a 1ghz Snapdragon Nexus One. Throw on the GPU on the Droid and you should be faster in games.... Oh and also many of the "iPhone ports" should work better on the DROID simply because the 3GS was a TI OMAP based phone and not a Snapdragon phone. So many DROID users have reported better game performance than N1 users.

I honestly think the DROID was a home run hit given the number of ROMs out there and the development community. It's hard to say what you gain with the Droid 2 when the specs are so similar. Maybe a faster stock processor, but nothing you can't achieve with a DROID OC. Remember there's low voltage kernels for the DROID so it's not like you're gulping power by overclocking.

Is it that much faster? 50%? I know the OMAP > Snapdragon, but I didn't know the margins were 50%....
