why should he pick a different instrument JUST BECAUSE "EVERYONE" plays guitar?

pick what you want, id say classical guitar.

but either way you're going to make your own decision so

Ocarina
Ukulele (Ukelele)
Uilleann Pipes
Bagpipes
Flute
Harp

All beautiful instruments, but uilleann pipes and bagpipes tend to be played in a more morbid fashion, and are loud, so bad for your apartment. The ocarina, ukulele, flute, and harp are fine though. And beautiful. Did I mention that?

This song is beautiful! I heard it a while back when it came out and it's sooooo good. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I definitely know I want a piano now. I guess the guitars and other instruments just cannot compare when my heart is the one making the decision. Did I mention I'm pretty passionate about music? :p How about Rocket Man by Elton John? AWESOME!!!

WOW! Nice drums! I bet they cost more than $350 though! ;) I was looking at some last night and they seem to be a ways out of my price range. With the versatility I'll have with an electronic keyboard, I'm not saying I can replace drums completely, but I can recreate similar effects. My uncle used his drum machine to replace his drummer when he quit a while back before he got a new guy for his gig.

Thanks for your response, but I'm not really looking at a career in musical production; just as a hobby for me to enjoy young and old and so that I can share my experience with my friends by playing.

Trumpet and trombone playing don't mix well because the require different conditioning of your ambuchure (lip muscles)

Accoustic guitar. You can take it anywhere with you....great for camping trips, etc.

One of my life-long goals is to learn the piano and be able to play the Moonlight Sonata.

I played all 12 pages of that from memory when I was 11 years old.

I wish I hadn't given up classical piano after 13 years, just ran out of time for it.

Harps are awesome. Very challenging to play well, and they are NOT CHEAP. Learn it and you can make good money.

You can make some decent scratch playing organ, too.

I am also tired of guitars. I would recommend piano or perhaps accordion. The problem with most wind instruments is that you can only play one note at a time, and it can get boring not having anyone to harmonize with.

However, it is kind of nice to be able to keep a recorder in your back pocket and break it out when the timing is right. It was a great addition to many jam sessions for me, and it also gave my lips a rest after blowing on the saxophone for an hour.

If it's any consolation, I picked up guitar and bass and never had a single lesson in my life to play them after learning piano. Piano teaches you about music more than how to play an instrument.. you can use that knowledge on any instrument and create music.

That Yamaha is fine. I was actually going to say "Yamaha" before I even clicked the link :p
My GF has been a pianist since she was a little girl, and plays mostly classical. Her Yamaha is 76 keys, that's enough to play most pieces. Some of the ones where it's not enough, you can transpose the keyboard up or down as necessary.
