Deciding on a fresh video card. Truform, AA, and visual quality are factors.

I've been planning on buying a new video card for a couple weeks now, and I'll probably make the purchase within the month. I was dead set on nVidia's GF3 TI500, but I started having a look at the Radeon 8500 because I have heard a few people say some great things about its Truform feature and its anti aliasing capability. ATM I have a GF2 GTS, so I think it is about time to upgrade to something fresh so I can handle the DX8 games around the corner, but I also want some cool new features. I don't need frames for what I play (Wolfenstein mostly, as of late). I got plenty of frames already with my GF2. I'd like to have better visual quality with about the same performance I have now (average 90 fps in Wolfenstein).

So, what I'm asking is...How does ATI's visual quality stack up and how good does Truform really look?

I know the GF4's should be released in two days, so I'm kinda hyped for that and hoping ATI will get aggressive and drop prices more along with nVidia. I'm definately waiting a month or so to see how the GF4's do, but I'm really curious about ATI.

I guess I'm just in the mood to stray off course for awhile. First I decided my next rig would be a P4 now I might switch to ATI after a couple years of nVidia.

ati's 2d is really much more superior than nvidia's. if you wanna upgrade now, don't. wait a few months because ati is releasing a new graphics chipset, the r300. i think cards that use this will be out in late spring - early summer (not sure). your gf2 will do good in those few months of wait, of course, if that's what you decide to do.

I could spend my entire life waiting on a new card. Heh. Honestly, I'm fine with the frames I get, and my visual quality is decent, but I know there is something better. I just want something fresh and new, and the prices aren't bad at all on these cards. I'll probably wait until the Radeon spring updates are out and the GF4's to make a decision. Prices will drop and I may be able to grab a "last generation" GF3 or 8500 for less than $150.

I still wanna know how that Truform looks and if it is really worth it? Anyone with EXPERIENCE, not just people who've heard..

Thanks for the link. That gives a good technical overview on the Truform but still no good comparisons or opinions. Plus it is dated in May, 2001...well before the Radeon 8500 was out.
