I thought that all drives did constant calibration, but this 180GXP noise seems a very audible example.
Perhaps because platters are supposed to be of aluminum which will expand quite significantly.

IBM's 75GXP series was horrible and had massive failure rates(had one go bad and it's been replaced twice and the 2nd rep is on the way out and developing bad sectors now), the 60GXP's had somewhat higher than normal failure rates, but all their drives since then seem to be fine. Maxtors don't seem to have any problems w/ abnormaly high failure rates, but compareing the DM +9 or +8 to the 180GXP and the Gxp mops up the maxtor drive in performace and noise lvls, (check Storagereview) for the info. So if your looking for performace + lower noise get the IBM otherwise go w/ the cheaper Maxtor. Hope this helps....

Storagereview have no review of the Plus 9 but do have results in a database which doesn't bear you out.
Too bad they have no reliability data for it!
