Anyone know of a decent strategy game where you really need to use strategy to fight the battles, more than building up resources?

Kind of like settin gup staged battles with loads of troops and trying to beat the opposition?

(Roman legions, Ancient Chinese forces, those sorts of numbers), specfically large forces, where tactics and planning are really important?

I have Age of Empires 1 & 2, but I want something more strategic, where you have to set out your strategy and not just use the steamroller ease of AoE.

Total War - any of the versions out right now are pretty decent. Lots of troops and strategy is a must. No resource gathering is done, at all. Diplomacy is also important in the game.

Sudden Strike... excellent WWII, very realistic... you dont build units/gather resources.. you get a set number of units (reinforcements every once in a while), Huge maps, all sorts of sweet units... field guns, long range howitzers, etc. I love it

I haven't played any of the ones you listed. However, Command and Conquer: Generals seems to be one of the most popular Strategy games out at the moment. I'm prety sure you would feel its more of like AoE though.

Warcraft III is pertty good, has an RPG feel to it if thats sorta what you are looking for.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

This is true, though sometimes you can lose the units in heavily treed areas. Plus the enemy doesn't always react well. Sudden Strike II is a little better than I.

Sounds like you are really looking for the "wargame" genre which is pretty much dead now. Strategic Simulations Inc / SSI was king of this genre in the 90s, you should be able to find some cheap "shovelware" collections. Pick up an issue of Computer Gaming World and look in the Hall of Fame for some really good ones from different time periods.

Generals isn't bad. Except all the units sometimes movie sluggish when grouped together or forced to move in and around complicated terrains. Sometimes they just stop moving all together, which is terrible for a RTS actually.

Other than that, I enjoyed the depth of the real-time strategy it offers. I have to mention this because although Tanks can't cast a slow spell on ranger infantry, that does not mean it has no depth.

I agree, one of the most challenging RTS I have ever played.

The Operational Art of War by Talonsoft- no FPS, etc., it simulates every board game every made or imagined
(you can program your own wars and battles for the late 19th through 21st centuries)

I spent many an all-nighter defended W.Germany from the Soviet pack, invading Grenada, etc. This is old school
at its finest :)

I third the total war...strategy in that game is an absolute must. Resource gathering is virtually non-existent, it's all about combat.
