Decent games at Big Lots YMMV

Yep, Total Annihilation, the original, no expansions, for $6. In the smaller, now standardized box. Not the old school giant boxes that are still mysteriously floating around Fry's. 🙂

All three games were $6. (each)

There were some other games that that had less interest to me. One of the Hitman games, City of Heros/Villians, (Not sure which one) Lord of the Rings Online.

Not bad for B&M if you were looking for any of those.

Anyone who hasn't played the original Total Annihilation should immediately find a copy and play it, if you're a fan of RTS.

There were many among us who felt it was the better of the games between it and Starcraft. *COUGH*absolutely*COUGH* Ahhh, memories from the nerds that waited for that new Friday unit to be released on Boneyards every week. (UNDERWATER METAL MAKER? WTF?!!?)

TA is worthless(relatively speaking) without the commander pack.

edit: still, hot and thanks for the post. I might have to pick it up just to keep it under my pillow for comfort.

Some of these old games need to be purchased with care to avoid buying some dud version, or repackaged limited old version.

I know I have a bunch of different TA discs, but I forget which was actually the keeper that works on XP, simple protection etc.

My local BL also had FEAR Director's Edition for $6.00 and Defcon for $4.00. They had plenty of Quake4 copies left at $6.00 each, but I haven't talked myself into picking it up yet.

TA was great, but I think to say that it was better than starcraft is to selectively ignore MANY aspects of starcraft that are a thousand times better.

I can understand your arguement. This, in all actuality is a Coke/Pepsi arguement. TA had me hooked for a long time. To me, it was more FUN! Starcraft, while meticulously crafted, amazingly balanced, and was doing this with THREE races, just wasn't as FUN. All of my friends agreed. TA, initially, was better reviewed and won more GotY awards that year. (Which, I know, means nothing in the long run.)

I know that it's the Korean nation pastime. I know TA didn't have the staying power, but I'll stick by my opinion. 🙂

I know what you mean. I've played TA and SC and SC seems like a huge APSfest.

I mean, not that APS is unimportant... but or that its all there is to SC, but IMO it is too important. It is less important in TA/supcom than SC.

$5 at cc

Ah, total annihilation...I still have the original TA and core contingency SOMEWHERE. I doubt I'll ever find it though.

Sounds to me like someone took a few ass whippings on bnet followed by kekeke or ^^.

I can't really agree. My 5 closest friends and I played the hell out of it. None are asian.

I can't quite put my finger on why, but I just enjoyed Starcraft a lot more. TA had a badass aura about it, but it didn't feel professional to me. It no doubt had a lot of cool features such as adding units easily (many of which were really cool), but I prefer a locked down balanced experience. To me balance is the 2nd most important aspects of an rts. The first being fun. Starcraft had both of these in my mind.

Yes, what is the name of that new game? I am curious too. And I agree, TA was a very good game during its time. I can't believe it has been more than 10 years now...

Supreme Commander. They're working on SupCom 2 now published by Square Enix.

It is all personal preference. I liked the original C&C and Red Alert better than Star Craft. (But then, I was never a big fan of Warcraft 2) I still played the heck out of Star Craft, and felt it was a fun game.

All games have their positives and negatives. Starcraft had a hard unit limit, and also only allowed 9 or 12 (I can't remember) units to be selected at a time. This gave it an additional level of micromanagement for no reason. I adapted, and just made multiple groupings where I would have made a single grouping in C&C, but I shouldn't have had to.

Back to the OP, I just bought SupCom, and it is pretty cool. I would like to play without unit limits though. Is Total Annihalation a game without unit limits?

TA Ruled! come on...who didn't love Big Bertha...the bigass gun. Took forever to build but once it was up and firing it was awesome. MYOP it was the best RTS game ever.

Yes, there are NO unit limits. This game was infamous for being able to bring systems to their knees due to the huge maps and crazy amounts of units.

Just a update, I was in there today and they had Viva Pinata, Stranglehold, The Club, Iron Man, New Hulk Game and TOCA Race Driver 3 $6 each. None of them can be beat for $6. Although I only picked up Viva Pinata(heard it was decent). Like title says though its a big YMMV.

Big Lots is supposed to have purchased a bunch of old CC stuff, so could be showing up soon.

Gotta watch yourself at Big Lots, they love passing their purchasing mistakes on to customers.

Yes, Core Contingency is a must have and Battle Tactics is great to have too.
