Decent free web-based email?

I have a GMail account and a Hotmail account.
Both suck.

Any other reliable and fast options? Did have a Yahoo! email account once, but that was ages ago. What's their spam filter like, do they have much downtime, and do emails arrive quickly?

My main gripe with Hotmail is that it's got a crap spam filter and it's had quite a lot of downtime and issues recently (ie: unable to log into my account)
GMail also has issues. Once I sent an email at the same time to my Hotmail account and my GMail account, it took about 5 minutes to arrive in my Hotmail inbox, and it arrived 6 hours later at Gmail.

So, is Yahoo decent?
 
Yahoo mail's spam filter is the worst of all 3. Speaking from experience... DAILY. :|

Yahoo is quick with email though. Hotmail has indeed been unavailable or slow A LOT in recent memory.
 
gmail is a good junk mail account (ie all my sign ups go there, the labels and stars really help)
yahoo is a good personal email account.

Once when it was coursework I needed to do for the next day, and I'd finished what I needed to do by the time it arrived.
The Hotmail copy worked fine, finished it, checked Gmail, and the copy had arrived there.
I'd rather not risk it again. Nor would I like to risk being unable to read my email at all from Hotmail 🙁

i've had my account for years, using it all over the web, & I don't get any spam
*shrug*
 
I've had no probs w/ spam w/ Yahoo, seems like all the spam goes directly to bulk mail. I also don't get any spam w/ gmail. but then the gmail is still fairly new compared to my yahoo.
