Decent DX 9 video card?

notoriousformula

Senior member
hello all, i'm looking for a decent DX 9 compatible video card...I'm stuck with FX 5200, ATI 9200, 9100 and 9600 SE options..Which is the best performance card?

thanks.

Try to squeeze for a 9600 if you can.

Why do you need DX9 support though? Any of the DX9 cards you listed will be too underpowered to play a game using DX9 stuff.
Unless you mean "will work with DX9 installed" in which case it's a different story.

See about a 9600 (for DX9) or Ti4200 (refurb) if you don't need DX9 features.
What's your budget? And can you get things online, or are you limited to stores?

If it's just a game that just requires DX9 installed, then NVti4200 or an ATI9100 will be good enough.

If you actually need a DX9 hardware card, then I would not even consider anything less than a 9600pro at this point in time, and I would definitely try to find the money for a 9800pro somehow. For NV it would be a 5900 series card.

If I were really limited to those four, I would get the radeon 9100.

I want the card to play almost all games with fair FPS, I already have a 9800PRO in my main rig.. The new rig will go towards my younger brother..do you think a 9100 can take FarCry or Up coming games?

Another thing, I can't find any Canadian or US store selling 9100's..can somebody post a link?

Many thanks 🙂

By saying "play farcry" i assume u want to just have it at whatever settings at 30+ fps, right? Well if that is the question, assuming the rest of the pc is up to par (1.5 gigs atleast w/ 512 ram or nothing running on 256) then u could do it. It may load slow if u dont have enough ram and u may experiance periods of choppyness, but u will be able to play it. Doom 3 and HL2 are also made so u can play them on underpowered systems. Your tradeoff is night and day in terms of visual quality if you were to buy one of those cards that u listed. Here are better suggestions....

What is your budget on these cards?
$60?: 9100 128mb
$78?: GF4 ti4200 128mb (much better then 9100 and only $18 more if u can afford it)
$100?: 9600 128mb
$120?: 9600pro 128mb
$175?: 5900 128mb
$200?: 9800pro 128mb

Don't forget about a 9700pro if you can find it for around 150-160. Performance is right up there with the 9800pro with only a few FPS difference.

9700pro is priced around the same (if not a bit more) then the 5900. It has slightly better IQ but slightly less speed in todays games.

the 9100 and 9200 are not DX9 cards, the 9100 is based off the 8500 and the 9200 is based off the 9000, which is slower than the 8500

ok, lets just forget DX 9(who cares about it anyway!?)..whats a decent card for normal gaming under $100 ? TI-4200 OR 9100 OR FX 5200 OR 9200?

thanks.

the geforce4 TI4200, which can be had for around 80 dollors is MUCH better than the 9200, 5200 and is faster than the 9100

Buy a GF4 instead. A DX9 slideshow is still a slideshow.

I was surprised to find that a 9600 is about as fast as a 4200 at 1024x768 with HQ effects in many current games, so grab one if you can't find a 4200. As a bonus, the 9600 will offer much cheaper AF and can also do DX9 effects (albeit at less-than-impressive speeds). But a 4200 will probably be faster at lower IQ settings and lower resolutions, with which you'll eventually end up playing with these older and slower cards, so it's probably a smarter purchase.

If you can afford a 9600 Pro, go for it, as it will offer up to 50% faster performance (due to 50% higher fillrate and memory bandwidth) and sells for only 25% more in the U.S. It'll also allow for AA+AF at up to 10x7 in many games, whereas a 4200 will pretty much limit you to 2xAA or none at all.

It'll probably be easier to find a used 4200, and that'll get you a better price, too.

i had a gf4 ti4200 overclocked to about ti4600 speeds (till i fryed it last week from getting water on it)
I also have an fx5200 overclocked about 20% on both memory and core
the fx5200 is nearly half as fast in most every game i play when compared to the GF4
the radeon 8500 isn't a bad card either and is roughly comparable to a good GF4 ti4200 card imo

the sub 100 dollar dx9 cards aren't worth it if you actually wanna play DX9 games at anything other than 640x480 or maybe 1024x768 with studdering and jaggedy movement during play
Just not enough memory bandwidth as many of these use regular ddr1 chips like those found on ddr400 system memory.
i think 120-200 is the budget gaming price range right now
anything lower is just a video card with "features" but no horsepower to back it up lately

good luck
