This company is offering the Plextor 40x cd reader for $59 plus ship ($13 for fedex 2 day). The next cheapest on pricewatch I found was about $80+ Just ordered one...

Centrix

They seem to have a lot of good stuff at decent prices, though their inventory is a bit odd ;)

not to crap on the thread or anything, but if you already have a plextor cd-rw, i think the truex drives are better for the same price.

ok, I'll clarify it a little more :p

I am referring to the 40x SCSI Plextor. Prolly the best cd reader for the scsi side. Ide drives are cheap, heck they had them for free this past weekend (40x range) however, this is scsi not ide. Big differences.

That being said, Plextor is the best of them and this is the cheapest I've ever seen them. Certainly not a hot, hot deal, but a pretty nice one at least :)

Plus, that site's got some interesting hw ;)

I agree...you can't get anything better than a plextor. I'm really tempted to jump in on this. Oh what the heck.

Very nice price. Closing in on HOT. Certainly, the lowest price
I've seen for this drive. Note that Centrix, the company selling
it, has one of the best scores on resellerratings.com that I've
seen...Their shipping is real, too. ($11 shipping on 2 40x
drives + a few cables).

Anyone know if the 40X is significantly faster than the 32x? ( And please, no smartasses with the "yes, 8x faster" line please.)

If these 40x drives have the second generation BIOS chip (v1.11),
then they do DAE MUCH faster than the 32x drives, and much faster
even than the Ultrawide 40x (or first generation BIOS standard
40x drives). If they have the first generation BIOS chip, then
they are somewhat better than 32x, but it's a judgement call whether
you want to shell out for one if you already have a 32x.

I *think* (perhaps someone else knows) that Plextor will send you
a new generation BIOS chip upgrade if you have a drive with the
old BIOS.

Unless there is some breaking recent news, Plextor does not make an IDE cd reader. In fact, they did not make IDE cd recorders/rewriters until recently (if I'm not mistaken, 8x was the first one). It was big news for Plextor lovers.

As for the 40x vs. 32x - I have not seen any noticable difference. I have heard many people say they are virtually identical. The only exception is in digital audio extraction...I believe the 40x does offer a nice jump in DAE speed, if you do a lot of audio ripping.

You can check out a review of the Plextor 40x Max(v1.11) in this Scsi cdrom drive roundup at Storage Review

Look at it's DAE. It starts at 18.5x and ends at almost 40x!!! It's average is just over 30x.

I forgot to add that the Kenwood 52x true scsi drive only does DAE at about 11x throughout. Not good if you have a 12x or faster burner and want to do audio cd to cd burns.

Any standard 50 pin internal SCSI cable will work.

Of course, this assumes you have a SCSI card (or SCSI connection
on your motherboard) that is also standard 50 pin internal SCSI.
If your SCSI card (or mboard) only offers 68 pin SCSI, then you'll
need an appropriate 68 pin to 50 pin cable or else a 68 pin to 68
pin cable and a 68 pin to 50 pin adaptor.

Or...You get the idea. Bottom line: The Plextor has a standard
internal 50 pin interface.

diesel,

i have the same scsi controller. all you need is the 50pin cable and it'll work fine, assuming you're not also using both the 68pin internal and external connections because i think the 2940UW only allows 2 of the 3 to be used at any one time.

Yes, this is the Plextor 40x Max drive, which, uses the 50 pin cable. The Plextor 40x Wide drive uses a 68 pin cable.

You also might want to check out Hyper Micro for this drive. They sell a refurbished retail one for $70 and you can get UPS ground shipping for $7($77 total). That's just a little more than the $59+$13 fedex 2day($72 total) listed above.

I emailed Hypermicro asking whether this was the version w/the newer 1.1x firmware, or the older 1.0x firmware. They told me that they have mostly 1.1x drives, but some are 1.0x ones. I also asked if I could make that sure that I got a 1.1x drive.

> Is there any way that I can ensure that I get one of the newer v1.1x
> Plextor drives if I order from Hypermicro?

Sure, just put down that you want that revision in online order
comments when ordering.

I just ordered one a few minutes ago w/fedex 2 day shipping for $81.30 total.

Just an update. I also asked Centrix-Intl what the firmware of these drives are, too. They told me they are v1.11.

Oh, yeah these both seem to be excellent companies. Hypermicro has a 6.7/7.0 on Reseller Ratings and Centrix has a 6.3/7.0.

If these are v1.11 drives, then they just went from warm to
HOT. Brand new v1.11 drives for $59? That is DAMN hot!

This is much hotter than a refurbed drive for $69, and much much
hotter than the $90+ you'd pay for one through retail channels.

Buy one of these drives and you'll never look back!
