I'm not exactly in a position to lay the smack down on junior members who post OT

, so here goes:
"Back in the day,"
www.valueamerica.com had some of the best promotional deals ever. They all work through their "ValueDollars" system. Generally, you get 1% of your purchases back in VA$ - these can be applied to account for up to half of an order. Ie, you order something for $200, it subtracts 100 VA$ from your VA account and you only have to pay $100 in cash/check/credit/whatever.
The kicker was that there were a few promotions where, for example, if you signed up with a Visa card you got 100 ValueBucks!! There was also the $20 "birthday" deal, and the $50 WWII deal - end result, a helluva lot of people have several accounts with $170 to burn. I myself bought 2 Maxtor 7200rpm 27GB drives, back when they first came out and were the best ones on the market, for about $240 total.
The VA$ from Visa were supposed to expire Jan 31 of this year; the "birthday" VA$ expired in December I believe. Turns out the Visa$$ are still in all of my remaining accounts, as are the WWII$$ - but according to the salespeople I've talked to recently, all VA$ will definitely expire in September. Most people who got in on the deals spent all their VA$ a long time ago, but I was out of the country for most of this year so I have quite a few left.
Obviously, they work best when combined with rebates, as you can take 50% off the
original price without reducing the rebate amount. Thanks to rebates, I recently bought
six sticks of 64MB PC100, lifetime warranty, for a total of $60

(That was before I returned to Anandtech; search Ars Technica for the deal if you care, although it expired at the end of June).
Damn, I type too much; should put this in a FAQ or something.
