If you don't insist on color, then a Samsung laser. Check Hot Deals to see if any special rebates around.

If dell ever has their 50% off deal again, I'd definately recommend their laser P1500.
I picked it up for $100 a few months ago.

Samsungs and Minoltas are commonly on sale "after-rebate" for around $80 -- check hot-deals.

For an ink-jet, I'd recommend AGAINST!! Lexmark. They seem cheap -- and can be had at places like Target or Walmart for $25.... but replacement ink blows the deal.

My next ink-jet will definately be a Canon -- where ink is reasonably cheap, and print/picture quality is very high. I've seen sample photo prints on the canon i960, and they were awesome.

I recently bought an Epson R200 from Newegg for school. It's on sale this weekend for $83.99 shipped. It's a nice price for a nice printer. To me, the text quality seemed a little bit fuzzy, not as sharp as my mom's HP K80. It can print on regular paper, photo paper (in sizes like 4x6"), and on printable CDs/DVDs (cool for custom music CDs or backup labeling).

Another good one is the Epson C84. $85.99 on Newegg. The advantage to these Epson printers, for students, is that they have multiple color ink cartridges, so that you only have to buy a new cartridge for the color that's actually out, instead of one big color cartridge.

The Epson c66 may also interest you.

Anything canon. Black ink for a canon is like 6$, black ink for most printers is like 25$.
