I gave my kids an iPad 2 a few years ago and apps just aren't running great on it anymore. We use it for media playback during long car drives so specs don't need to be huge:

1. 9"+ screen
2. Android
3. 6+ hours battery life

Nothing earth shattering, just solid. Suggestions? I may even go with a kindle, we'll probably use 3 apps other than a media player.

I have a Dell Venue 8 that's decent. Got it for around $160. It has a really high rez screen and is AMOLED.

Heck, for media playback, nothing is better than windows tablets, still. You can find tons of atom tablets cheap, and unlike android they'll run any file you throw at it with VLC.

Hmm, how's VLC on android? I think I'd prefer android over windows for sure. Also, how's the battery life on those intel tablets? I had an acer 8 inch running android and I'd be lucky to get 3 hours out of it

After months of trying to decide on a tablet to buy I've come to the conclusion that there are no good "affordable" mid-size Windows tablets. If you start researching them you will find nothing but owner's threads full of disillusionment and despair. Outside of the Surface line I think you'd be wasting your time.

Yep, I have a 11" flip win10 laptop that's running on atom and I'd call it barely adequate. Nevermind that the interface isn't kid friendly. Kids really take to iOS but a good launcher makes android completely acceptable, which can't be said for windows

I love my Asus transformer 10.1" screen with win 10 and a detachable keyboard. It allows me to go mobile with a readable screen plus servers as my portable book reader just in case I need it.
