One of those 3+ million DS systems was purchased by me 🙂. I also guess all the Left 4 Dead advertising paid off. There were also a lot of store sales ($35 in some places) for W@W, so I'm not surprised to see it with a huge sell-through.

1.44m 360s? Someone at Microsoft must be doing a happy dance. At this rate, they may very well catch up to the Wii by holiday 2010.

And, FWIW, I don't think 726k PS3s is all that bad a number, especially given the pricing differential.

I think the PS3 number is pretty bad when you consider that

Nov 2007 PS3 sold more than Nov 2008
Dec 2007 PS3 sold more than Dec 2008

It is a pretty bad sign when your console is dropping in year over year sales. Yeah the economy is bad and that can account for some of it but that price without the shitty economy is still retarded.

The PS3 is done

I don't think so. I think if the rumors are true and they drop to 299 it might sell if MS doesn't respond with a 50 dollar cut. But man I imagine if Sony did that they'd be hemorrhaging money on each PS3 sold. They are clearly caught in a no win situation.

Outside of the US, the 360 has gone from losing to the PS3 by 10-20% to outselling it by 20%, according to VGChartz.

It's being a broken record to say this, but Sony needs a price drop if they want to compete with the 360 in current sales. They probably can't catch up at this point.

Heh...guess it makes sense that Wii Play is #1. Almost all those 2.15 million people that picked up a Wii were looking for an extra controller. Honestly, it shouldn't be called "Wii Play w/Remote". It should be called "Remote that happens to come with Wii Play". 😉

It does look like Left 4 Dead has some legs to it. It's ones of those games that builds a good word of mouth.

Gears of War 1&2 has already sold over 9 million at this point. Pretty impressive.

Activision is going to milk COD to death after the numbers the last two games in the series have put up on both the PS3 and 360.

Here is the top 10 software for 2008. Oh look, more people buying an extra Wiimote. 😉

Top Software of 2008
1. Wii Play w/ remote - Wii - 5.28 million
2. Mario Kart Wii w/ wheel - Wii - 5.00 million
3. Wii Fit w/ balance board - Wii - 4.53 million
4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii - 4.17 million
5. Grand Theft Auto IV - Xbox 360 - 3.29 million
6. Call of Duty: World at War - Xbox 360 - 2.75 million
7. Gears of War 2 - Xbox 360 - 2.31 million
8. Grand Theft Auto IV - PS3 - 1.89 million
9. Madden NFL '09 - Xbox 360 - 1.87 million
10. Mario Kart - DS - 1.65 million

Both of the bolded numbers are incorrect.

Gears of War 2 has only sold ~4 million worldwide. 9 million would put it in Halo 3 territory.

Wii only sold 2.15 million this month.

Activision has been milking the Call of Duty franchise since it started. A yearly release was guaranteed.

Also:
Nintendo prints money. Install base. Price drop. Wow, can't believe the PS2 is still selling! Wii play is still on the list! 360 dominates software again, guess it's because PS3 owners only use it as a Blu-ray player. The 360 is for hardcore gamers - not that softcore gamer crap the Wii has. SKU. Price point.

Yeah, the 2.47 million for the Wii is a typo and I meant to say just Gears of War, not Gears of War 2.

Cut me some slack. I just got back from a 2 and a half hour martial arts class and I'm beat. 😛

I am amazed at Mario Kart in the top, that game is old

You're amazed that one of the most popular games for the Wii got a top sale during its first holiday season since release? Not everybody can get a game right when they come out. And with all the Wiis sold in Dec it makes perfect sense. How can you be surprised by this?

I was thinking he meant Mario Kart DS cuz it is like 3 years old. I was surprised by it.

The price is just killing the PS3, killing it dead. People can't just shell out $400 in this economic environment. Something sure needs to change if they want to sell more units.

Yeah, I was glad to see L4D. That is one brilliant game, and keep in mind this doesnt include PC sales, which I suspect are even higher for that game.

I really wonder why Sony doesn't seem to realize this.

They probably care less about killing the PS3 than killing themselves is my guess. They'll get another try at the console game in a few years.

They cared more about their margins this holiday season than sales, if they're even at break even yet on unit cost.

Sony will eventually drop it sometime this year...the big question is, will MS drop the 360 even lower than it's at now? (Which I suspect, they definitely will)

It's a combination of a few things.

First is the age factor - children who were too young to have a DS are growing into the age where they are capable of playing it.

Second is the replacement factor - kids are breaking their systems, and many simply just buy a new one.

Third - the DS is much different than a console in that more than one can be had per household (and often does). Families with multiple children, couples, etc.

I bought my sister a DS for Christmas this year. She is 29.

The year of the PS3 ends with a crashing defeat for Sony. 09 doesnt look any better.
But hey they won a nearly non-existent hidef movie market. It may pay for itself over the next 20 years.

I am amazed at the PS2 still selling! Its has GOT to be the longest running console ever. At least Sony got that right.
