Interesting that sub 3 in primary shows f1.0 at 0mm focal length. That's as thin as it gets. Nice photo.

I didn't know they made lenses with such a wide aperture.

There have been lenses made with even wider apertures, although they're very rare. Canon made a 50mm f/1.0L which is now discontinued but still highly sought after by some. In this case, I am guessing that it is an EXIF error, but would be interested to learn otherwise.

My guess would be 50mm 1.8.
also
Aside from the head being in focus, its tough to follow the dof in other areas on the figurine.

I"m thinking of picking up a 50mm for my Nikon D80 but not sure which one to pick up. 🙁
F1.4/1.8? I'm not sure if I'll need the extra 0.4 on the 1.4. F1.8 is around 100 bucks... and the F1.4 is at least double that!
I'm not sure if the F1.4 is worth more than double the price of the F1.8.

It is if you need the extra speed.

The f/1.8 is fast glass, the f1.4 is faster still 😉

the f/1.8 is fast enough. image quality difference is negligible. three times the price for the f/1.4 buys you 2/3 of a stop, better build quality, and shallower depth of field. if you've got money begging to be spent, go ahead and get the f/1.4. otherwise, save the US$200 for another lens, and buy the f/1.8.

Just for what it's worth...
I think his picture would have been a nice entry to November's secondary contest (motion).

How's the focus speed on the f/1.4 vs the f/1.8? With the canon, the f/1.8 hunts quite a bit even with the faint hint of low lighting. And it's buzzy as hell, heh. It'd be worth it to me if I use it more for the faster focusing speed.

I'm peeved I didn't kick my ass into entering this month :|

I gave my old man the Nikkor f/1.8 for chistmas, and he's just blown away with the speed of it on his F80.

The photozone review would seem to back this impression up, iirc it said the focusing speed was extremely fast with the D200.

It said similar things about the f/1.4, but I've no personal experience with that, indirect or otherwise.

EDIT: I'm similarly irate about the primary, I didn't realise the closing was the 22nd not the 24th this month 🙁

Yeahme too, i was pissed at my self...

second the fast AF speed of the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. it, and most other AF Nikkor lenses in the 100mm-and-under focal range, have a very fast autofocus gearing (one turn of the AF screw goes from the infinity stop to 7 feet or less). even on my D50 it focuses just as fast as my AF-S 18-200mm VR, though not as fast as the awesome AF-S 300mm f/2.8.

Whoops, it's been a busy weekend, and I forgot all about closing this thing off. Thanks dug for the PM reminder. I'll have to wait until this afternoon when I get home to finish this up.

we need to end this already...

It's like 02/01/08 here already 😉

February? You really are in the future.

😉

That's because of the international date line... Once you cross it to get to Australia, you have to add a month.

Come to think of it though, I thought they were at least a month behind us, not ahead of us 😛

On another note, has anyone heard from blurredvision recently?

Here is what I propose for the next contest
Primary January 2008 Contest Theme:

? "Warm Colors
? Lets turn up that saturation on this one.
? If there are any questions on the subject matter, let's discuss it here.

Secondary January 2008 Contest Theme:

? "Reflections"
? Great idea for running pictures, pictures that never end, or what ever can be done with great reflections
? Drag out that mirror or find something around you, but show us a reflection!

Eh... went ahead and updated the wiki

btw those are unofficial results

I shall be annoyed if I got rolled by votes three days after the contest ended, the fair result in 'Backlight' is a draw imo (despite my submission holding the lead for the last three days or so 😉)...

Eh... sorry if messed it up... it was 1 vote off so i figured give into the margin of error
I guess the final result is up to blurredvision
:camera:
😉

a note on the EXIF info in my submission:

the lens is a 35-year-old Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 mounted on my D50, aperture of f/4 in that exposure. note the "35-year-old" part of the previous sentence: that means that there is no CPU data to be recorded in the EXIF tags. I wanted a little more depth of field, and leeway with the manual focusing, so I stopped down. the rest of the EXIF data is correct (ISO800, 1/60sec shutter). I'm at home for winter break right now, and didn't bring my AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D with me, so I used the non-AI 50/1.4 from my dad's old Nikkormat FTN.
