Nope, XP doesn't qualify. Only Win7 Sp1 and newer.

If you don't already have a PC with Win7 SP1 or newer, then I would say, "yes".

I recall when Win7 was released, MS offered retail upgrade pre-orders for 1/2 price. Of course, those are "upgrade" versions, and if you want to be fully legit, you needed to have prior OSes to upgrade from. These are OEM, full, standalone licenses. So that's why I say "yes".

supposedly win 10 will be a free upgrade for any version so I am wondering if just installing seven without a serial as a trial will allow upgrading.

Supposedly pirated versions will be allowed free upgrade as well for a limited time which is crazy.

I'm not sure what you are asking, exactly.

Branded OEM copies that shipped with machines are "full" standalone license. They should qualify for a Win10 upgrade, AFAIK.
