The most painful thing about this discovery is how little one can do about it.

If your worldview requires that every "sane" person in the world is wrong, you might want to consider the possibility that there is something "wrong" with your worldview.

I watched a History Channel documentary not too long ago that had collected predictions from a bunch of famous people like Nostradamus. They quoted 5 or 6 of them and they all pretty much agreed that the world would end between 2010 and 2030.

I think it would be awesome to see the world as we know it come to an end. But then again, I believe the good stuff happens after we get off this rock.

I'm willing to place very large bets with anyone that civilization won't end in 2012...

What, no mention of sunspots?

I saw on current.tv, and they don't have corporate sponsorship so they never lie, that a huge solar storm will erupt sending out some kind of beta waves that's going to cause all 6+billion people to trip balls as if they had just ingested a massive dose of LSD. Those of us who have prepared spiritually and mentally will be fine, but for the vast majority who have no experience with this sort of mind state, the event will be incredibly traumatic.

2012 is not the end of the world, just the end of an age. A new age is upon is.

Regardless of the tripping balls "theory", and the fact that an extreme solar storm that emitted any kind of crazy particles would probably kill us through radiation before ever gifting us with the trip of all trips -
there is actually a lot of talk about the end of a baktun (sp?) not representing the end of the world, but an end/beginning of a new age.

My little "hope" is that an asteroid or comet will be flung our way, kill quite a few people in the immediate area and people around the world - something of that origin might just be necessary to get us to change our ways. We are going nowhere fast other than to more conflicts across the world. Humans are retarded, cling to old ways, and are extremely tribal in instinct - we want something to belong to. It gives us a feeling of order. Some strive for good lives inside of this order, some have that instinctual urge to lead the charge and have control over that tribe, or of a new tribe.

Either way, it might give us a chance to break from our current ways and establish a new world order. Not in the Orwellian dystopian style, but something that is a single "tribe" spanning the world, and thankfully the one good thing about our various tribal instincts is that people are going to strive to take the charge toward leadership of this, as our nature both dictates some of us want to lead, and some of those want to lead their own new tribe - a split from the patriarchy as their own rights as they mature. So some will fight to keep the old ways, but hopefully something like an asteroid killing off millions if not a few billion would give a world body a fighting chance to take off.

That, and it solves the whole population issue. The world isn't exactly ready to handle the numbers of mammals that we have produced. Food is always an issue, and as soon as nature gets bitchy we are in an extreme crisis, somewhere.
It's time we actually acted like a race, and no better way than for one race to be fighting for survival together, than in sects all apart fighting for their own survival.

It seems to be a primate thing that tribes fight and kill each other to prove dominance over territory. Most animals in the animal kingdom either ignore each other as they all do what they have to do to survive, or actually work together and the only family/tribe conflicts come in the way of the leaders simply fighting or showing they are better at something specific, occasionally but not often leading to death, and only a single animal, not a whole group.

These issues though are kind of necessary though, for the race to learn what is wrong and what is necessary, to get to the next step and mature as a species. We're a learning species. Look at the things we've done, gone "oops, that was a mistake" some time down the road, and learning from it. Eventually, maybe sometime in the future we'll go "oops. our ancestors did this and look where it got us. we're effing retarded."

Your ideals while interesting have been proving wrong thru out history. Dating all back to recorded history man has fought man. Any place or time where one person has more of something then someone else, is a different color, believes in something different or does something differnetly then other person there will be war.

Um... I know, that was the point. :p

Just because we've done something a certain way through our history as a species, does not mean it is impossible to change.
We just need some other species to fight wars with.

I skipped that little part in my other posts. While some global disaster would bring a lot of people together, little differences will break us apart and we'd keep mending and breaking that global tribe. It'd last, but it would never be the same forever.

What humanity really needs is a barbaric alien race to come by and pick a fight with us. If we have a different species constantly trying to fight us, we'll be too preoccupied with uniting all of mankind with the goal of providing a global resistance to the invading threat, so we wouldn't be fighting each other.

Now we just need some bitches to come pick that fight with us. Hopefully 2012. :)

The Mayans were pretty advanced in terms of astronomy, I'll give them that. How they knew so much then is pretty staggering. But if they were so smart, how did they allow their civilization to end?

People keep saying this, and yes, they were more advanced than say, cavemen, or even than Europeans of the same time. But TODAY we know a hell of a lot more about astronomy than they could have ever hoped to, and we know that much of what they said makes no sense.

Exactly, which I why I said "then". Believe me I'm not defending this 2012 theory. My point was if they were so great at predicting the end of the world, you think they could've prevented their own end. The Chinese have been around for many millenia and are still alive and well.

Its just like Nostradamus......People are quick to pick through his predictions and validate them but I want to see the same people extrapolate something he predicted and see if it comes true.....
