Laws like this and the do not call list are pro-consumer legislation that pretty much everybody benefits from.

I remember a thread discussing this when it first passed. Rs and Ds practically passed it unanimously. I remember Libertopians littering the thread saying it was unnecessary, congress wasting time on a non issue, and yes, government intrusion.

Free market solves everything. If you don't want to hear loud commercials don't watch TV stations that play them.

If free market solved all this wouldn't have needed gov intervention and it was a problem that annoyed a huge amout of people. Most tv stations did it and since most people were unwilling to stop watching just over this it was never going to get resolved without legislation.

I dislike the FCC and their meddling with profanity and nudity and fining people for free speech etc... but, I approve of this law.

If we've already got a huge overbloated government anyway, and we do... well, this is something positive out of it at least.

Very happy to see this is finally here. Especially frustrating at night watching TV with the kids in bed only to have the commercials screaming at you suddenly.

My only argument to this is simply: Where does it stop?

We already regulate what is right and wrong - with things like not allowing smoking commercials. I don't smoke and think it's disgusting - but I just don't like the concept of government telling people and their business what they can and can't advertise.

I'm fairly sure most remote controls have a mute button. But nevertheless, I guess it's not a big deal either.

If the free market doesn't solve it then it's not a problem to begin with. Just like white-only restaurants.

I hope this new law works, but I am just wondering how long it will take for the cable companies to find a way around it.

Also, I find it interesting that a .uk site is where one finds this American news story. Does this affect them in any way?

I've noticed it's usually the local commercials that play over the cable commercials, but sometimes it's all of them, of course, that's what the mute button is for.

This. The only time I see commercials is if I put on "live" TV for background noise.

Me either. Doesn't matter though because I have to turn the show up to 40 just to hear the fucking thing and then when the commercial comes on the neighbor accross the street can hear it before I have time to FF, not to mention my 8 month old sleeping in the room above my head.

There is no reason commercials have to be louder than the shows. It is a public nuisance. If the Rs and Ds can unite against anything in the last 4 years you know the "free market" must really be fucking up pretty bad.

I would hope HULU is included in "other multichannel video provider outlets".. They are by FAR the worst offender of this.
