But all we’ve seen from Biden officials since the House changed hands has been a combination of assertions that a U.S. default would be catastrophic — which may well be true — and denigration of any and all possible end runs around the debt ceiling. My heart sank, for example, when Janet Yellen, the Treasury secretary, repeatedly rejected the idea of minting a platinum coin — one of several possible ways to bypass the debt limit — as a “gimmick.” Yes, it would be a gimmick, but it would also be harmless. As I explained the other day, it would not mean printing money to cover the deficit; in practice, it would amount to carrying out normal borrowing through a back door.

The GOP are already trying to place blame on Biden and his refusal to negotiate on good faith. How do you think things would work out if Biden just went straight to the last resort options from the start, skipping any negotiations, and they all backfired because they where blocked by SCOTUS? How do you think that would play out when no negotiations where even attempted?

After all 7 trillion of the debt is the Trump tax cuts. That works out to 21,000 USD per person.

Biden isn't campaigning where the debt ceiling is concerned. This isn't about winning the hearts of voters, it's about doing what needs to be done. There is a time for getting a message out, and there is a time to just not worry about the message. Specially when it's already clear that it's the GOP that have created the problem. The only people who don't already understand that are their supporters, so the message you are looking for is pointless.


BTW, Clinton's message wouldn't make sense to most of the voters of today. That's the problem, people like you are looking for a messsage, one that needs to be spelled out for them, while the rest of us don't need a message, because we understand what's happening.

The unemployment rate in over a dozen states has broken through historical record lows. Prime age labor participation is as high as its been since 2008. Black unemployment is at a record low. We're enduring a massive labor shortage. This image you have of bursting welfare rolls and having too many immigrants is either a huge lack of understanding or an outright lie.

I literally said what the plan should have been was to be seriously considering and selling the 14th amendment or the coin as a totally on the table option, while framing the Republicans for what they are, so the American people understand choice A and choice B and what the Democrats are going to do. Now it's being presented as a negotiation the absolute worst outcome.

I'm not sure what is so complicated about making a plan and also doing the marketing well. This is politics. Welcome to reality dude cuz you're not in it.

Dude they're messaging has been horrendous. I'm glad none of you are political consultants because you would fail miserably.

The Democrats needed to keep the situation simple. We are not negotiating on a debt limit bill that isn't clean. And explain simply why and say if the Republicans want to crash the economy we're going to invoke the 14th amendment or mint the platinum coin. Let the Republicans bitch at home but you keep consistent to your message and you consistently keep it a binary choice.

Biden has not been consistent. At first it was no negotiation but guess where we are now, in negotiations. That is the last thing from consistency I've ever heard of.

The debt ceiling legislation is unconstitutional as the constitution says congress MUST authorize borrowing, and it also says we must pay our debt. The ONLY purpose of the debt ceiling is so the Treasure doesn't have to go to congress every time it has to pay the bills, it has ZERO to do with the budget.

Here are the facts:
Clinton got the deficit to ZERO, this has been verified many times and verified by bipartisan sources. Bush ran the deficit up greatly. Obama kept it about equal, Trump raised it far more. Biden has yet to finish a term we can get back to this at a future date.
