I know it's a political football to them. It's time we beat them over the head with the rhetoric about how they want to crash the economy and make things worse for everyone.
They are beaten over the head with that every time, which is generally why they have backed down in the past. The main issue here is internal Republican dynamics where McCarthy is so weak he can’t force them to be sane.

Rs won't say what cuts they want because they cuts they want they've already had to publicly disavow. They know there is no way out of the corner they've painted themselves (and everyone else) into but are not going to admit it and pull back. They'd rather destroy the economy instead and try to blame Biden.
I was reading this morning that the plan is to include cuts to SS and Medicare but call them 'Reforms' and hope that people are dumb enough to fall for their semantic games.

Lot of talk from Rs about prioritization (impractical and possibly illegal) again when they hit the debt ceiling they say they definitely will not hit despite their ludicrous demands which Democrats will not entertain. They don't want to say bondholders first into the lifeboat too loudly while the US economy melts down because it looks bad politically not because they care what happens.

If memory serves when they tried this under Obama one of the criticisms was that the federal government's systems are not set up that way and so even if they wanted to and thought it was legal (neither are true) it would not be possible.

I think Republicans are looking for anything, anywhere that will deflect blame away from them but I personally doubt it will work. As with previous shutdowns/debt limit showdowns the public knows that Republicans are the 'shut down government' people and will blame them. It's like how when crime is bad voters blame Democrats even if it's not their fault. When the government shuts down the voters blame Republicans (although here it is 100% their fault).

I mean if I was the R leadership I'd avoid the photo ops with Newt but...

Republicans refuse to detail the cuts they want because they'll be about as popular a fart in a hot car. Color me skeptical they actually pass a bill that's anything other than messaging or a few uncontroversial trims adding up to a tiny fraction of their claims.

Could be a few uncontroversial trims or it could be something like a 'X% across the board spending cut'. What I'm confident of is, as you say, they will not detail any substantial spending cuts that would actually go very far in reducing/eliminating the deficit.

what do we need, just 6 sane republicans to flip?

while that is possible, it's still just slightly probable with today's horrific and evil GQP. mostly bad hombres.

Todays' GQP is effectively a giant malignant tumor on the body and soul of the country that is America. And it ain't gonna be fixed with chemo either. Gotta perform surgery.

That’s a tough ask. 8 years ago - that would have at least been possible. Things are a bit better in the senate because, frankly, it become an old folks home. So their are a fair number of more pragmatic senators at the top. In the house it becoming a horror show. It’s actually kinda of nice to too have an 'old school' neo-con. Compared to the full on magats.

The good news is I'm seeing some push back from old school republicans who consider the current political stance in the party as unsustainable. Some are MAGAT-Lite. Tossing just enough red meat out to get into office, and no more. So at least there is hope that over the next 8 years the tide will swing in favor of a congress that’s willing to make some compromises.

The nutters will be with us for a generation because of the intense agitprop driven into the republicans by Fox, the Koch's and the Alex Jones of the world.

Lastly, as Robert Riech pointed out - there were a fair number of people who were going to vote for either Trump or Bernie; they felt the government failed them, and they were right - at least economically.

McCarthy is apparently speaking to Wall Street today to talk about the Republican "plan" to deal with problem created by moronic Republican brinkmanship. Though, why anyone would believe anything he puts forward is beyond me: just a complete clown of a speaker with little real power to control his caucus.
