Debit Cards and the net.

If you have a reputable bank, you can dispute any charge you didn't make. I use my Bank of America Visa Check card online all the time.

As long as it has a Visa or Mastercard logo, you are protected against fraud. Only thing is, if someone gets your debit card and spends $4000(thats the max per day), you are SOL for months until they sort everything out.

That is what im afraid of...

Does anyone know how old you have to be to get a debit check card with a visa or mastercard logo like discussed below? I am afraid you have to be 18 and I am 17 but I purchase stuff over the net all the time and hate having to use my parents.

in my opinion it's as safe as can be. i am a Washington Mutual customer and I log in with no problem and no hassle. Ive been doing it for a very long time now and there hasn't been a single problem. 😀

danny~!

What if someone cleans out your checking account if they get your debit number. Are you screwed? Or are you covered?

If someone gets your debit card and cleans out your checking account you are -temporarily- screwed. You won't get your money back right away. Sometimes it can take several weeks to regain all credit that has been lost.

This isn't the case for a regular credit card. They handle any malicious credit card uses very promptly. Also since it is not directly tied into your account, you will be more safe.

I use both cards and have not had any problems yet.

You can set a spending limit like $200 or $300 a day and your checking account number isn't on the card, it's a regular Visa number. And you have the spending limit you set in the branch, so it can't be changed over the phone, etc. If anyone ever gets the card, they can only spend $300 a day since that's the limit I put on that card I use on the Internet. I check my balance about every two days, so the most anyone could ever get is a few hundred bucks and that's gaurded against fraud anyhow.

Just a little info for ya.

Ok, I dont want a credit card, how can I get a debit card thats as easy to get refunded as a credit card, or does this not exist.?

That's a good idea Hamburgerpimp. I need to look into setting a limit on my debit card per day.

Don't worry so much about your debit card on the internet. Use it with reputable vendors online and you will have very little to worry about. Someone has a better chance of stealing the card from your wallet than they do nabbing it from a -secure- site.

Sure there are exceptions, but that is not new.

Your bank has to have online banking.

I belong to a credit union and they have online access, praise the lord.

Can you check your balance on line with visa/mastercard or only if your bank supports it?

Yes, go to Bank of America and open a Visa Checking account. You can only spend what's in your account and you can use it like a Visa at any place that takes it, has the same 16 digit numbers as a Visa. Plus, you can set a spending limit on it each day. And yes, you can go online 24/7 and see your account, what transactions you did, what checks have cleared, etc.

BTW, I never see the teller, I get Direct Deposit to the account from my employer and deposit any addittional checks into the ATM. Then order checks online.

I do use Paypal and that's a different story, I have that linked to a Wells Fargo Savings account where I keep near 0 balance, just in case Paypal tries to charge me back. I also keep my Paypal almost 0, as well.

I had a fraudulent entry I discovered just this week...a little under $30 from someplace. I called my bank, they investigated and found it was from an online porn place. I told them it wasn't valid, they reversed it as long as I agreed if it proved to be valid I'd pay them back. That was it. Of course, it helps that my brother is manager of the place 😎 (the bank, not the porn place)

I think you can be 17 to get a debit card, I am 17 and use mine anywhere that has the Visa Logo, Star Logo and some other one

As far as a teenager getting a credit/debit card, yes it is possible. VISA has some new card out meant for teenagers. Parents can set up a set ammount of money and hand the card off to their kids to teach them "the value of a buck."

I'm sure you can work something out with your folks concerning this if all else fails.

Credit cards are really the only true form of real protection. With a debit card your bank isn't always obligated to return the money to you and I've heard of cases where sometimes it wasn't. Just be careful where you use your card number at. I've shopped online PLENTY with my debit card, without issue, but it's still possible to get screwed.
