I am unable to view the spillcams at:
http://globalwarming.house.gov/spillcam

using Debian Squeeze and Firefox 3.5.9, I just get a black box with the video controls underneath but nothing happens when I press the play button. I am able to view the stream using VLC. Any idea what plugin or configuration I may be missing? The following plugins are listed as installed to firefox:

DivX Web Player
Quicktime Plugin 7.6.6
Shockwave Flash
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.30.2
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)

When I launch firefox from the commandline and leave the console window open these errors are displayed when I click the Play button:
TotemEmbedded-Message: Viewer state: PLAYING
** Message: Error: Could not open resource for reading and writing.
gstrtspsrc.c(4930): gst_rtspsrc_open (): /GstPlayBin2:play/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin3/GstRTSPSrc:source:
Could not connect to server. (System error: Connection refused)

TotemEmbedded-Message: Viewer state: STOPPED
TotemEmbedded-Message: totem_embedded_set_error: 'Could not open resource for reading and writing.'
TotemEmbedded-Message: totem_embedded_set_error_logo called by browser plugin

Well, well... here's an interesting one for you! :)

I've been putzing around with Flock, during the past week.

For the hell of it, I thought I'd see if I could get streaming WMP content working in Flock.

Since Flock is based on Firefox, I did a little Google'ing and found a recommendation to install:

  • gecko-mediaplayer
  • gnome-mplayer
LoL!

I haven't got WMP working in Flock 2.5.6 (yet), but I'll be damned if it doesn't work in Firefox 3.6.3

Here's a screenie of the Spillcam site:

mplayer is also working with WMP streaming audio -- which is a first for me! :awe:

Here's a screenie of that:

Sooo, it IS possible! :sneaky:

LoL! I love half-baked wives tales!

Example: "Man does not live by bread alone."

Actual quote: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

Example: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive."

Actual quote: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive. But, my, how we improve the score, as we practice more and more."

Nothing is impossible!
Nothing is guaranteed!

When you think about it (almost) everything is impossible. Guaranteed! :sneaky:

I did a little forensics on the WMP situation in Flock last night.

I've always h-a-t-e-d Totem. It's a worthless POS, IMHO!

mplayer is working great in Firefox -- plays WMP content like a champ.

Flock - even though I copied all the Firefox .so (shared object) files to it - refuses to use mplayer for WMP. It uses (gag) Totem, and Totem doesn't do WMP worth jack!

Sigh!

I really don't feel like it's my responsibility to fix Flock, but...

Hey, nothing is impossible, yes? LoL! ():)

Works for me: Ubuntu 9.04, Firefox 3.6, with an old 64-bit Linux Flash version. (V10; there isn't one for 10.1.) I'm not sure what's playing it, but it plays.

I found the same recommendation for gecko-mediaplayer, except I can't install it:
$ sudo apt-get install gecko-mediaplayer
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
gecko-mediaplayer
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/204kB of archives.
After this operation, 741kB of additional disk space will be used.
(Reading database ... 161435 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking gecko-mediaplayer (from .../gecko-mediaplayer_0.9.9.2-1_amd64.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gecko-mediaplayer_0.9.9.2-1_amd64.deb (--unpack):
unable to install new version of `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/gecko-mediaplayer-wmp.so': No such file or directory
Processing triggers for gconf2 ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/gecko-mediaplayer_0.9.9.2-1_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So I copied all the .so files from the .deb to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and it works! Found a post that indicates it might be a problem with dpkg

~Cool!

I was playing around with Flock 2.5.6 this morning, and realized that the .deb (I used) installed everything to the wrong folder. Flock is supposed to be installed in /usr/lib/flock2.5.6 but the .deb file installed Flock in /usr/share/flock.

LoL! Caveat emptor.

Sometimes I wonder about the competency of the ppl that build these .deb packages... :hmm:
