Hi I've been using red hat for a bit now and I was thinking of trying out debian, im still too much of a newb and have been having problems getting it set up, can someone give me a detailed explantion on how to install it and getting running.

Here are my system specs:
asus a7v-133
duron 700
maxtor 15 gig hd
128 mb of ram
3com etherlink XL PCI 3c900-tpo
tnt 16 mb video card (made by diamond)
onboard sound (dunno what it is, anyone with an a7v 133 wanna clue me in???)

one of the things Ive been having a hard time doing is getting the drivers installed, I guess Ive been spoiled by the simplicity of the red hat installation :\

Yeah, he deserved that. 🙂

Deserve what? I gave him a legitimate solution to an annoyingly overasked question. The question he asked was a poorly phrased: Teach me the things you have been learning the hardway. I have been working on increasing my UNIX skills for years and then someone comes in and expects everything handed to him? Not how it should work.

Yes n0c thanks for the sites, and im sorry for bugging everyone with the annoying overasked newbie questions, I have been reading over the Debian installation HOWTOs and the one thing that I find that they are very vague about is the driver isntallation part, which is the part Im having trouble with, the reason I was asking here is to mabey get help or tips from someone who has done it first hand.

Do you want modules or built into the kernel? Either way it mostly has to do with kernel compilation. And if you want an easy install, dont use video cards from companies that see linux as a toy.

so a diamond viper tnt isnt a good card to use? the only other one I have lying around is a hercules 3d prophet (orignal GeForce 256) should I try using that instead? I have been getting errors when trying to make the x config file in the debian install, and when I try startx it fails. And for the drivers I would probably use modules, in the debian installation I was able to find my sound driver, but I cant find a network or video one.

nVidia products are not the best to use in anything but Windows. Anyhow, what errors are you getting? Did you see them mentioned on the how-to from nVidia?

when asked if I wanted to create an x config file I hit yes then I get the error "_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Cant connect: errno = 111" over and over
