Debark a dog?

My mom sent me this e-mail yesterday and I was kind of pissed to hear about it.

"Someone here was "bragging" that their neighbor had their 2 dogs "debarked." When we asked what that meant, she said, the woman was tired
of hearing her dogs bark, so she had their voicebox taken out (or their vocal cords cut). Don't you think, (1) that is cruelty to animals and (2)
the vet should be reported? I never heard of such a thing...Kendal said they do this procedure in New York."

Since when have they been doing this?

Yeah, this is a regular procedure that people can have done to their dogs. I think it's bull$hit myself. My brother's dog barked a lot and caused problems with his neighbors in his apartment complex, so he bought one of those shock collars that triggers when the dog barks. Well, my mother when she found out about it, told him to try the collar on for size and see how he liked it. Keep in mind, my brother was a good 20-21 years old at the time when she told him this. So he tried it on for size and got a good shock and changed his mind about it.

When I was a kid, I remember visiting a friend house where the neighbor had their dog's voice box taken out. He was a Chihuahua 🙁

i thought maybe you wanted to make your dog bark less. my dog barks so loud and all the time and as much as my family doesn't like it i know we could NEVER do something like that!

Some (many?) vets won't do it. But, it has been going on a long time and AFAIK, it's not illegal.

My dog can get pretty damn annoying with her random barking at sounds--when the baby is sleeping--and I'll often fantasize about having that debark option... but I agree it is too cruel and wouldn't do it.

The way we get our dogs to stop barking are muzzles or we squirt them with water. Surgery sounds morbid just to stop hearing something. Considering we have 6 dogs, (had to accept the new bastard but now I'm getting paid $20 to take care of him 😀) we've never been reported or anything for my dogs being loud. And it's difficult as hell to get pure beagles to shut up after they see a chipmunk or when they get the scent of one.

My understanding of the procedure is that the vocal cords are scraped down to nothing, that way the bark is barely audible. I dont know if thats the case, but I dont know if they actually remove them. Funny thing is I had a neighbor who had this done to his dogs and the cords healed...the dog barked 2x as much when he got his voice back.

All the vets that I know of in my area refuse to perform that type of surgery. Seems pretty cruel to me.

What makes this different from cutting a tail off at birth? Or cutting the claws out of a cat. I personally don't care about any of these 'cosmetic' surgeries. Its not cruelty if its with good cause. I kinda prefer this over the shock-collar method.

On another note... Police also hate this procedure. Apparently a lot of "gangstas" have there pitbull's vocal chords cut. This makes them much more dangerious because the usual warning bark of "stay away" is not heard. So the officers will end up walking in on a pissed off mutt without knowing it.

It should be outlawed IMO.

You're not fixing it, it wasn't broken in the first place!

Vet I used to work for feels the same way. He won't do ear/tail docking either.

What is ear/tail docking?

Basically chopping off part of the ears and most of the tail. Dobermans, for example, are actually born with floppy ears but many people have them hacked off so they stand up straight. It's a seriously messy operation, believe me.

We had a citronella collar for my golden retriever that sprayed citronella each time the dog barked. While still maybe a bit cruel the dog learned to only bark "when necessary". Only took about a week of wearing the collar during times when he would usually bark uncontrollably.
