Death to cassette...Car MP3 players?

Hi all - I'm getting a shiny new 2004 Corolla tomorrow, and unfortunately for me, they are finally getting rid of cassette players in new cars. What this means is my MP3-CD Rio is no longer going to work as my means of music in my car, since I rely on the cassette adapter to listen to it. I've heard the little wireless FM radio adapter from radio shack, and its definitely not an option!

For those who own one or have built one, what would you recommend for mp3-CD-car players? I have a huge library of MP3 Cds, so I cant go with memory media. I really want to spend as little as possible, and I don't need any special tag reading features - just give me the ability to browse directories, and I'm fine. Seeing prices of $200 an up really scares me...can I get something for a more affordable price?

Believe or not, people have replaced their factory stereo with an aftermarket CD/MP3 player (available for less than $100)

Get one with front RCA jacks and you can plug whatever you want into it, too.

Bought my Pioneer DEH-P5500MP around September of last year, and have LOVED it. Never ever listen to the radio anymore 🙂

Ordered it online for $160 shipped - $20 Pioneer Rebate = $140. Much more affordable than I thought it would be. Also installed it myself so I saved more money there.

...but you can definately find them < $200!

That's the exact one I'm looking at getting in a couple weeks. Glad to hear good feedback on it.

Where did you find it for $160? Most places seem to want $30-$40 more than that. Edit: Nevermind. It seems Etronics.com (a fairly reputable online vendor) has it for $162.

Got it through the buy.com deal. Glad I jumped on it.

...my only gripe about the unit is that it does not continuously scroll through the MP3 tag ... it scrolls once and then stops ... guess nothing's perfect 🙂

its too bad more don't. i swear they are just trying to sell their own more expensive...way over priced headunits.

Too bad the Pioneer does not have audio in ports in the front.
Some of the JVC MP3 units do...perfect for an Ipod or even Sat radio.

lol - of course this sort of defeats the purpose I'm looking for a new headunit, since it sounds like units with RCA jacks are already MP3-CD capable. I suppose its useful for hooking up smaller units that use memory, etc, but I'm definitely looking for just MP3-CD.

Thanks for the link/reference to the Pioneer. Any other opinions? I might be interested in an RCA-jack mod.

Seems like a wide range of products are here from the first link I found on Google...I can't believe how affordable Blaupunkt is. I remember back in the day when they were always quite expensive...

A lot of head units now have provisions for a RCA input via a $20 dongle that plugs into the cd-changer port. Sounds a hell of a lot better then a FM Modulator, even a hard-wired one.
