Thats the same Crock of Sh!t they tried to say about Windows2000 Professional and Server. Claimed that once they said they werent going to support NT4, that "Businesses would HAVE to upgrade."
Truth is, 90% of my business clients I visit, all STILL use Windows NT4.
So its another flush from the Redmond PR Toilet again.

NT4 is still a very good business OS - well designed, efficient, secure, friendly and very, very fast. It will run perfectly well on laughably slow hardware - think Pentium 133 with 48 RAM. When it's installed properly it is incredibly stable - I have seen NT4 boxen run for literally years without a reboot. Sure, win2k/XP are much more advanced, but a lot of business just don't need the extra features they offer, especially if it means upgrading their hardware.

Even if MS is dropping support for the "legacy" OSes, that doesn't mean people well NEED to upgrade their software and hardware. Lets face facts: business users are cheap. If they don't NEED to buy something, they won't. With that in mind, they won't be buying anything new if it works.

businesses should not be running windows 9x anyway. As for home users like my mom, she never got support from microsoft. She will probably user her 300mhz win98 machine for the next 3 years.

NT 4 works just fine for most businesses. I used to support a couple that stuck with NT4 when Win2k came out and didn't lose anything. Especially places like manufacturing firms where a large number of computers are essentially thin clients connecting to AS400 type databases. Why would you need a prettier interface for that? OTOH, I used to support a cleaning company with over 100 small offices that spent a bundle on Win2k upgrade because their Sys Admin was a young 2k MCSE and thought they needed it. They didn't really every implement a lot of the AD fuctionality and I think they wasted a lot of money buying new boxes that run Win2k. Some businesses will upgrade, but it has been clear to me that MS would like for it's large customers to upgrade way before they ever really need to.

It still burns my ass that MS shoves out these new OS's before many device manufacturers and software developers get a chance to get caught up with the previous OS release. There's still a huge amount of companies out there that don't support XP yet. But...all you can buy anymore is an XP loaded computer.
