Most stores now will just say they have a sale but keep the price the same. I know Sears is really bad for that. I think NCIX actually does decrease it though. I think what happens is lot of people only buy if it's on sale, so stores nowdays are pretty much forced to always have sales. I'm sure they just slightly jack up the normal price to compensate for the fact that there's always a sale. But tell me that striked out number with a lower number beside it and the word SALE does not make you want to buy it. It works. 😛

Then there's stores like Canadian tire, they'll have a sale on a specific item, and have 2 of them in stock. LOL

Got you to go to the store! They have seem pretty good sales though if the item is in stock.

Yep I think that's the trick. It does not get much to coax me to go there either. I always walk out with something I don't really need, but still want. Home Depot is right next to it too, so there's some serious competition going on there.

I'm pretty sure many of the sales are sponsored by the manufacturer, if not directly then indirectly by the retailer meeting a sales target which gets them a rebate. If they need to sell 100 more of item x to receive a rebate on from the manufacturer, then putting the item on sale for a few days, or until they've reached their goal, will end up making the store money or possibly just breaking even.
