Never been an issue here. Still, fuck the SATA cable manufacturers for making eSATA cables different from regular SATA cables. That pisses me off.

It was to prevent people from using an unshielded cable. They also made other changes to eSATA.

The old cables from right around the launch of SATA1.0 were awful.

Now they have keyed clips that click into place and they dont fall off anymore.

How does that make them unsafe for children??????????
?????????????
??????

I came in here hoping for some kind of "zomg my sata cable shocked my balls" story or something. Fail.

I wish they were a tad heavier, and mated blind more easily, but I don't usually have a problem with them coming off.

Funny this never happens to me. In fact it takes a bit of work to disconnect the SATA cable from the HD and mobo socket. OP's got a case of the PEBKAC.

and this

Damn, I have a hard drive hanging from the power and sata connector and it doesn't pop out lol. (It is a light ass SSD though.)

I'm with the OP on this one. They suck. On my computer the end of the cable that goes into the mobo is nice and snug. . .no problems there. But the end that plugs into the HD. . .I mean come on! Honestly it's almost like it was intentionally designed to come off with the slightest breeze. Of course maybe that's a SATA I problem that has been rectified with SATA II design or something. My machine is getting a little dated so I don't have SATA II parts.

Curse you, designer of the crappy SATA I cable that comes off all the time! You suck! I hope you end up needing a pace maker one day and they wire it up using one of your own cables you schmuck!

SATA connectors are garbage. Smaller cables are nice and all, but the connectors on the drive are made of paper-thin glass. Like somebody else said, breathe on them wrong and they break off. Had it happen to me, thankfully, the conductors stayed on the drive and the plastic piece stayed in the cable. I put it back on and it works, so I glued the cable to the drive.

Why don't the drives have surrounds on the connectors like the mobo does?

The Western Digital Secure Connect cables come with the retail drives and they are awesome, nice and flexible. The don't have the clips on the motherboard end but still, never had a problem with them coming out. On the hard drive end, a plastic piece goes into the drive next to the pins and holds it securely in place. I grabbed as many as I could from a friend at a computer store since they don't come with oem (WD) drives (they will only work with WD drives)

This.

Too bad most motherboards don't come with these kinds though, but you can pick them up online for like $1 ea.

I have enough SATA cables to string them together around my apartment. And even the most used, worn ones are 1000 times better than the best IDE cable/port I've ever used. I would much rather deal with a fragile connector (that is not nearly as fragile as you guys are making it sound, you guys have Hulk hands or something?) than 40 fucking pins.

I  SATA

they are a little looser than they should be but IDE is not always fun either... try pulling that whole thing from an angle without taking the device out. 😉

My SATA HD and DVD didn't become unplugged when I replaced the HSF which required pulling out the MB and removing the vidcard. I even did it again to turn the fan around. They weren't the ones with clips either.

I see I'm not totally alone on this, so "Rant" somewhat justified. Perhaps when I upgrade CPU/Mobo I'll get one of these fancy SATA cables that work well.

Sata connectors were very cheap and easy to break in the beginning but have improved a lot since then. The ones on motherboards seem to have a tougher more flexible plastic, the weak area is the connector on hard drives which I have seen broken ones.

The ones that came with my mobo were the same way....and I used just a TINY dab of super glue to hold them in place.....but eventually they worked themselves free again....so I bought a couple of connectors with clips....once of the best purchases I ever made.

I have SATA cables with and without the metal clips.

They really don't come out unless I'm rummaging around the inside of my computer with boxing gloves on.

I mean if you're going to do your bull in the china shop impression...

I have seen some that don't hold tight. That said, they don't just fall off, there needs to be some tension on the cable so just make sure I plug them back in and all is good. Well, actually, maybe it isn't... I have one drive in one PC that isn't waking up from sleep all the time, I thought it might be going bad but perhaps the cable is loose. I'll have to check on it, if that's the case I'll update this post. Odds are it's the drive getting ready to fail.

This. The SATA cables from the past two years or so (must have a locking clip!) are the best thing since sliced bread. In Ye Olden Days, a "power system" with multiple HDs and two CD-Roms would have the airflow inside totally choked off due to the forest of thick IDE cables.

You can only tuck and fold so much, you know? I  SATA.
